Since this post is making the rounds, I want to point out that the kind of bigotry that fuels fascism has a long history.
As my area of research is German #folklore , I am currently writing a series of essays on #antisemitism is expressed in old German folk tales. Here is the first essay - any feedback is welcome!
@fiee I can only speak for German folk tales, not 19th century German literature in general.
But it should be pointed out that the "Schwarzer Mann"/"Schwarze Frau" figures of these tales are not necessarily intended to portray people of African origin. If that's intended to be explicit, the terms "Neger" or more commonly "Mohr" are used.
@fiee@Irisfreundin Würde mich interessieren, ob das ein Volksmärchen oder ein Kunstmärchen (d.h. eine literarische Erschaffung) war - da gibt es oft ziemlich große Unterschiede im Erzählstil.

It hurts me writing about this, because I can't see the same tension here, let alone such a mass mobilization. Many prefer to listen to comforting, unfounded tales that fascism ended in 1945 and can't get back.
Feels like screaming into the void.
This makes me so admired and grateful for German people's stance these days.
