Every time I have to solve a captcha I'm forced to confront unresolvable semiotic edge conditions. Is the post that supports a traffic light itself part of a traffic light? I just don't know. I am inadequate to log in.

It's dog friendly for all situations. Hike your leg or not, doesn't matter whether you're a miniature or Great Dane, all smells are at the same level!
I wrote an essay a while back about another aspect of CAPTCHAs: They are, emotionally and aesthetically and kind of existentially, incredibly depressing to look at
@mattblaze is that the base of the fire hydrant or its shadow? Part of the crosswalk or a curb? Does the back bumper on this blurry bus count? Bike handlebars or foliage? Headache alert ‼️
@mattblaze I have exactly the same dilemma with captcha. Sometimes I have to do over twenty of the darn things to pass the test and I start feeling like that android in Blade Runner who doesn't realise they aren't human...
@mattblaze Oh, absolutely. I hate those things for that very reason, and also for the reason that they are invariably American, and US stuff doesn't look like British stuff. (Usually the difference doesn't matter, but I've had captchas where it does.)
It said "click on all the castles", but - being British - I can tell the difference between a castle and stately home.
And they were all stately homes.
The one where you are supposed to identify "lakes". Um, I'm pretty sure that's a river. And that one could be the ocean? Or a sea? Is this what I'm actually supposed to be training it on, and my failures part of the data? Probably.
@mattblaze the thing that always blows my mind is sometimes I feel like I can click WHATEVER, and it'll work. Like the thing barely cares if I'm right or not. Maybe it's a percentage of correct? Wild
@mattblaze Deutsch Bahn asks me to confirm if I'm a Mensch when I log on, and all my Jewish friends are getting real sick of me calling them to confirm.
@mattblaze Discord asked me this the other day. What do they mean by “can”?? Like .. it’s socially acceptable? It’s technically edible? I would succeed if I tried to hunt it for food?
@mattblaze and what is a crosswalk? We don't use that word in Australia. And is the mirror still a car? And the pictures are so small. Is that tiny thing under the tree a bicycle or not? And more to the point, who cares!
