“While the level of our failure is obvious to all, a level of success is real nonetheless. We articulated deeper, more authentic truths than those regularly acknowledged by the political establishment,” says Marianne Williamson, suspending her campaign for the Democratic Party presidential nomination. https://marianne2024.com/

cmeier,

@w7voa No one, except for some obscure historians, will ever remember or care who Marianne Williamson was.

I’ve been incredibly angry — furious, even for ME — about the most loathsome and contemptible defamation suit I’ve ever seen in my career, and now Mike Masnick at TechDirt has written about the despicable case and about my anti-SLAPP motion to dismiss it. Reading it just makes me angrier.

https://www.techdirt.com/2023/11/20/if-you-kill-two-people-in-a-car-crash-you-shouldnt-then-sue-their-relatives-for-emailing-your-university-about-what-you-did/

cmeier,

@markuswerle @Popehat Agree with this. Much better to let the criminal and civil/insurance legal systems deal with this than to step outside that system and go make claims, warranted or not, to the idiots employer or university in this case.

What @Popehat has done here, is to call down the wrath of the internet on someone. Too often, that wrath proves unfounded and the poor slob is never able to recover. Don't ever try a case in the court of public opinion. That isn't how justice should work.

I've switched from Chrome to Firefox about a decade ago. It's just as fast and intuitive, and container tabs are a game changer. It always catches me off guard when I see its market share is so low.

cmeier,

@wiredfire @medley56 @victorvicpal @Gargron Did IT dev (mostly SQL) work for a top 5 int'l bank. I told them I'd leave and they could hire someone else to fix their abysmal db performance issues if they didn't let me install the tools I required for my work.

They gave me admin rights on my box. I also fired my boss when he refused to let me measure the system end-to-end because he knew where the problems were.

Learn when it is appropriate to tell the IT chain of command to f-off.

cmeier,

@wiredfire @medley56 @victorvicpal @Gargron Right, but if you don't trust your devs, maybe you should find new devs.

I just learned today that the builtin sqlite module cannot load arbitrary SQLite extensions: there is a short list of allowed extensions, and you cannot work around it without patching Emacs.

I really hope Emacs is one day freed from the FSF, this is getting embarassing.

cmeier,

@galdor > Trying to stop users from doing something through usage restrictions in free software is as ineffective as pushing on an object through a long, straight, soft piece of cooked spaghetti.

-- Richard Stallman

Although he was speaking about license restrictions, the statement could as easily be applied to software that will only import an allowed list of extensions. Seems oddly inconsistent if does this with sqlite extensions.

cmeier,

@amszmidt @galdor > we do not want our software to be used to subjugate users, e.g., by loading non-free extensions...

Should it really be up to to decide what a user can or cannot easily load? IIRC, Stallman use to rail about "fascist limits" (by which he meant things like arbitrary line lengths) and this strikes me as a kind of fascist limit imposed by free software which says "we won't make it easy to work with $X just because we don't like $X's license."

Completely bonkers that when I voice support for the rights of Palestinians, dudes say "But you're a woman, they don't want you to have rights." Neither do Republicans but I'm not going to call for Orange County to be nuked, what the fuck?

cmeier,

@rebeccawatson Orange County isn't run by a terrorist organization that wants to kill everyone in Riverside.

Your analogy has to be the stupidest thing I've read today.

cmeier,

@rebeccawatson It pains me that people use shallow metaphors as a substitute for deep thinking.

cmeier,

@claralistensprechen3rd @rebeccawatson Not comprehending why that metaphor is inane is an indication of stupidity which is why you are unable to offer meaningful solutions to very difficult problems.

cmeier,

@rebeccawatson Because you just blithely tossed off a comment w/out thinking very deeply about all of the implications.

cmeier,

@rebeccawatson And this one is on me for thinking that I could show someone that bad metaphors are not a substitute for hard thinking about intricate difficult problems.

But that is more an issue with Mastodon which isn't really set up for much other than the extremes of either shallow comments or pointers to articles where the nuanced adult thinking can be found.

Mozilla has released Firefox 119. New features and security fixes are included. The biggest change in this release is the ability to edit PDFs.

It's a new bug.

How To Be Nice Online

I'm going to preface this by saying Human Rights are not a subject of debate, period, if you disagree, go ahead a block me, you aren't gonna like my account.

  1. Stay out of the comments of posts about personal beliefs and ideas, unless a question is involved. There are many people on Mastodon with different belief systems, there are also many people who get triggered by Religion or things like Astrology. Both of these things are valid! Remember your experiences aren't the same as others. It is better to make your own post than berate someone's personal beliefs or to try push your personal beliefs on someone who doesn't want them. Posting Bible verses in a post about atheism or agnosticism is aggressive and unkind, so is giving someone a lecture about how their beliefs are ruining the world. If you need to vent, this is what your own account is for.

1 1/2. CW posts you know are often inflammatory, your instance usually has a list. Not saying you need to CW everything, but try to make an accurate description and use tact.

  1. Think about tone! Tone is infamously difficult to get across in text. Sometimes it's better to overexplain or send an additional message making sure people understand you are making a joke or being sarcastic.

  2. Make sure what you're reading is the intention of the writer, before you get upset, and go on the defensive. Send a private message and make sure you got it right. I like to assume the best about people first, rather than assuming the worst.

  3. If someone says something you don't like make sure it isn't out of ignorance. I have used wording that other people found questionable or posted something without understanding the full scope. We are human and we make mistakes. As above, approach the person in private with your concerns, I appreciate everyone who has come to me in sincerity and kindness.

  4. If someone does come to you with an issue, don't overreact and go on the offensive. If I'm in my feelings, I will often show it to a trusted friend and ask their honest opinion. It's okay to take a breather and think it out, no one needs your answer or action right away.

  5. It's okay to block or mute, whether it's a whole account or just a word or two, make your experiences and everyone else's the best it can be.

  6. HELP STOP BULLYING AND TROLLS IN THEIR TRACKS! Not just for yourself, but for anyone, if you see something, say something. PLEASE, PLEASE TAKE SCREENSHOTS! I know when your upset it's hard to remember, but bullies and trolls will often delete posts, and just get away with it, because there isn't proof. When you make a report, please make sure you include a reason why you're reporting, and any toots or screenshots you have, and encourage others to report also. Admin can't be everywhere, and don't always understand the situation or what and why you're reporting, be specific and keep receipts, so the administrator can be fair to everyone.

  7. Remember, think twice before posting a comment that is or could be construed as negative. Not everyone needs or wants your opinion. It's totally okay to scroll on past or make your own post on the subject. No one owes you their attention, but kindness and understanding is way more likely to get it than negativity.

cmeier,

@evacide @meanderer Me: How was the D&D game?

Kid: Great! We spent 20 minutes trying to break into a cat shelter.

Me: Why and how do you break into a tax shelter?

Kid: A CAT shelter.

Me: Why would you break into a CAT shelter in D&D?

Kid: One of the guys in our party wanted a cat.

Me: Ok.

Kid: We got caught by one of the hobbit workers. Had to pay 295 gold pieces to get away. Plus we donated another 95 gold pieces because it was a non-profit.

D&D sure has changed since I used to play it.

A genocide is unfolding with leaders clearly communicating their intentions and green lit by“international community”. Announcing a siege of 2M already besieged people, with the prime minister live tweeting bombing residential buildings, “human animals.” The West’s hypocrisy knows no bounds.

cmeier,

@timnitGebru It was once cynically said that the only solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict would be to lock Yasser Arafat and Ariel Sharon into a room with a butcher's knife on the table between them. Then charge whichever one emerged alive with murder.

One can hope that peace, justice, and human rights for all will eventually prevail. But given the religious fanatics on both sides, I'm not hopeful that I'll see it in my lifetime.

People should really take the time to read posts or threads in their entirety and attached articles before commenting on them. It’s really not that much to ask and I rarely post anything behind a paywall.

It’s by far the most annoying thing about this platform that I really haven’t run into anywhere else.

cmeier,

@TonyStark > People should really take the time to read posts or threads in their entirety and attached articles before commenting ok then.

Good luck with that. The failure to read before commenting has been a running joke on Slashdot, one of the web's older tech news / social media sites, for 25 years now. This isn't going to change.

If you're mad at EFF for making it possible to use Chrome with less tracking instead of yelling at people to use a different browser, then I assume you have never heard of harm reduction. Giving people digital privacy and security advice means meeting people where they're at. Otherwise, you're just running your mouth to make yourself feel smart.

cmeier,

@evacide > If you use Chrome, you can disable this feature through a series of three confusing settings.

A more complete story would also have posted links to alternative browsers. It can't be any harder to install FF than it is to work through "a series of three confusing settings" to disable the privacy sandbox "feature" in Chrome.

This is way too accurate.

cmeier,

@anze3db One of the worst projects I worked on was a DB that had been "future proofed" against any possible need the DBA/architect could conceive of. The result was that the simplest, most important use cases were nearly impossible to do quickly and easily.

It has been my experience that people who design such code are also the least likely to accept criticism because, of course, they are doing everything by the book w/out realizing that the expert author hasn't written real code in years.

Google has released a security update to patch another Chrome zero-day vulnerability. Tracked as CVE-2023-5217, the zero-day resides in libvpx, a codec for processing VP8, VP9, and AV1 video files in Chrome.

The company says it spotted the attacks this Monday and released a security update two days later, on Wednesday.

https://chromereleases.googleblog.com/2023/09/stable-channel-update-for-desktop_27.html

cmeier,

@campuscodi Google annoyances: You must hunt down the CVE yourself since Google requires a login to read anything useful on the page you site.

CVE: Heap buffer overflow in vp8 encoding in libvpx in Google Chrome prior to 117.0.5938.132 and libvpx 1.13.1 allowed a remote attacker to potentially exploit heap corruption via a crafted HTML page. (Chromium security severity: High)

But there is no git tag for 1.13.1.

There are 10 merges since the CVE date, but none reference the CVE.
