@Edent for reasons... My primary computer is a self hosted Windows VDI desktop. I (my scripts that I should really just make a cron job for) rebuild the image after patch Tuesday each month (which as an intended side effect also installs/updates all the apps I use). The host/server is updated on each point release.
@Edent needs “when I’m forced to” option. I may never go to windows 11 if Proton continues to improve, I can’t believe how Windows is degrading
Macs I upgrade when I need a feature, and the yearly cadence is frankly a giant pain in the ass for audio work because it takes forever for vendors to validate against the new targets and by then next year’s beta OS is nearly released. I hate the cycle and if I could afford it I would have a singular separate high end Mac not involved in iCloud at all.
@Edent I wish I could do it automatically for my personal kit but MacOS makes it so hard with asking for my password or to not have something unsaved get in the way on an overnight update.
My work laptop will update in the middle of the presentation and gives me no option but to bomb out of whatever I’m doing. I also can’t pre-empt this behaviour by checking for an update an hour before an important meeting.
@Edent
When I feel like it every so often, windows broke things with automatic updates, so I'm never using a system like that again, that being said I update Linux every few days without issue so maybe it wasn't the auto updates that was the problem
Debian gets updated every two years to a new release, by that time it needs a full re-install or I try and do that to clear out and have a fresh start.
@Edent So, my strategy isn't exactly listed here :) When it prompts, I let it linger for some time because I want other people to experience the problems before I do. It's selfish but there always seem to be enthusiastic volunteers. Then after a while (longer for major releases) I apply it. So prompt+schedule?
