Now that Bluesky is open to the public, I hope developers and publishers give it a second look. It has a lot of good ideas about the future of social networking: https://www.platformer.news/bluesky-public-opening-jay-graber/

@caseynewton I don't think that the custom moderation approach suffices as a defense against harassment. Certainly you can custom moderate to block trolls, but what if the trolls are engaging in a doxxing campaign, posting the real address of their victim, trying to get them fired and so forth. The kind of thing we saw with GamerGate, for example. At some point the owners can't duck; they either tolerate that stuff or they don't.

@caseynewton With the wisdom of time and hindsight, I prefer not to support the same guy that gave us Twitter. I don’t need an algorithm feeding me garbage.

Edit for a typo.

@caseynewton I’m very sceptical of the sustainability of it given that their investors will either need returns or they’ll run out of money. It’s still highly centralised and a lot of what you write about here are future plans which after crypto and other hype/vapourware I’m not holding my breath. If the company fell over tomorrow what’s left? A lot of unfinished work and no baseline content moderation. Happy to be proven wrong but I’ll wait till I see it.

@caseynewton that said I enjoy reading your newsletter (I’m a subscriber!) because I like to see your optimism. But I think sometimes you’re a little too optimistic! Don’t let these companies run you over with their hype, as much as you’d like it to happen! :)

@CatherineFlick @caseynewton agreed. So far, Bluesky sounds just like Twitter did in 2007. It's nice of them to open their API so developers can grow their platform for them, but what happens when Bluesky inevitably decides to shut off access to the API 5 years?

We really should have learned our lesson by now. https://cybercultural.com/p/twitter-in-2007-the-open-platform/

@hankg @caseynewton i'm curious what makes you say they don't care about decentralization? I know a few folks on the team and they care deeply about it, and are extraordinarily thoughtful about the tradeoffs related to it. So I'm curious what you saw that makes you think otherwise? It could be something I've missed.

@caseynewton Not for me while they require a phone number. Tried signing up today and as soon as I saw the SMS requirement, I bailed out.

    lucas,

@caseynewton It seemed promising at first, but at this point it's still highly centralized
