Yes, this brings the CDC guidelines for COVID into line with guidelines for RSV and influenza.

It's not just that is COVID more severe. The guidelines for RSV and influenza are not right either. We need universal paid sick leave, not permission to return to work while still contagious.

merz,

@ct_bergstrom Does any country have the guidelines you suggest for RSV or influenza? And how would such guidelines from CDC, which have no legal force, have any effect on paid sick leave?

@merz

I don't know country-by-country, but in Australia, for example, the guidelines for influenza are 24 hours since last fever AND 5 days since onset of respiratory symptoms or 3 days since beginning antivirals.

As for paid sick leave, that's not a matter of CDC's guidelines, it's a matter what we need to do as a nation instead of rushing everyone back to work while still contagious.

@ct_bergstrom Thank you.

Dr Osterholm said the CDC was just trying to put out a guideline that people would comply with, but this is asinine policy.

The disconnect between personal health and public health in this pandemic is beyond absurd now.

@skry @ct_bergstrom This is the asinine policy they have been following from the first moments of the pandemic, only making recommendations that they think the public is willing to listen to.

@mikemccaffrey @ct_bergstrom Considering the complexity (asymptomatic, testing, symptoms, covid-year-knowledge), the 10 days and a negative test (if symptomatic OR positive) advice had some solid underpinnings in the research.

They started to pander to industry and ensure school and work spread with the 5 days’ isolation, mask-optional guidance.

This 1-day 💩 is insulting, negligent, antiscience—the opposite of what they need as an untrustworthy org trying to right the ship.

@ct_bergstrom Companies strongly resist this, because, as with WFH, there is a fear of an abusive 3%? 5%?
