@GottaLaff@GhostOnTheHalfShell This may be hard to believe, but it's true: the New England Puritans gathered all of their most prominent figures, wrote a letter declaring their absolute opposition to this idea, had everyone sign it, and sent it off to the people deciding how the nation would run.
Their complaints were that any church merged with the state ceases to function as a church and is merely an arm of the state, and; the only way they could freely practice their religion was if everyone else could freely practice their religions, too, and a state church made that impossible.
As a Christian, I'd rip the ceremonial-deist "God" out of the Pledge of Allegiance, off the currency, and out of everything else associated with the secular state, which should remain resolutely secular.

@GottaLaff Someone needs to ask those who profess to be Christians, which denomination other than their own they are willing to practice? Since a great number in Congress claim to be Catholic, would Lutherans be ok with Catholicism? Would they be ok with the government taking roll at church to make sure they are complying with the theocracy?
