😔 that is not nice. In, IT industry experience is becoming more a liability than an asset.

10kur,
@10kur@noc.social avatar

@nixCraft it has always been. Ageism is real and biting hard in all fields of IT. Although, this "why are you still here" is new, it was usually more like "old people can't adapt and learn as fast as young ones"

@nixCraft The recruiter has a boss, probably older. Call him.

@acesabe@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft sadly many companies will always go for cheap and inexperienced then when dealing with the fallout of hiring cheap and inexperienced, throw more cheap and inexperienced at the ensuing dumpster fire. HR teams often have no idea about hiring IT, senior management little more and expectations seems to be 1 person to handle all aspects of the IT/dev ops where a team of 5+ would really be bare minimum...

darwinwoodka,
@darwinwoodka@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft hey, if you happen to be a woman this happens to you in your 40s. Tech loses experience through its misogyny and ageism every day.

@nixCraft

Imagine being a woman in the industry with the exact same resume: Those sorts of dismissive comments would have been the be the norm from the beginning of your career, first about your gender, then later your “experience”.

Us white guys don’t usually have personal experience with employment discrimination until later in our careers when everyone started noticing our age. If we are lucky, we are reminded of our own patterns of bias & discrimination when we were young whippersnappers…

@nixCraft AI Will do loads of nice copy paste

kavo3,

@nixCraft It's a crazy world we live in! The population is aging, there are many vacancies, chatGPT replaces experience. I'm worried about how it will all turn out?🙈

tve,

@nixCraft Can anyone under 50 years old be competent in senior roles?

This is yet another problem of recruitment having totally separate goals from business or tech. Silly gatekeeping and reducing the amount of applicants in any possible way.

Random keywords, CV fonts, mandatory office days, age,... Just modern equivalents of rating handshakes.

@andrewfelix@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft the older you are the more you know how much you’re worth. They need someone more exploitable.

@nixCraft
I don't want to work in a company that doesn't understand that the role of a CTO is not the same as Software Developer. These are quite different things. But also, luckily in many countries that would be discrimination by age

Itty53,
@Itty53@mstdn.social avatar

@adelgado @nixCraft

In what company are there developers leaping straight to the C Suite?? I can think of at least four higher job titles before you're even considered for CTO.

Developers are like mechanics. I'm a senior dev, given the choice I'll take the older one every time.

@jadugar63@mastodon.social avatar

@adelgado @nixCraft
Right on!
Also, some/many devs just want to focus on technical problem solving, not dealing with management issues and people and reporting to leadership and all that C-suite stuff.

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@adelgado @nixCraft I'm trying to parse this worldview.

Do they think the number of CTOs equals the number of developers?

Or is it like Highlander? Developers fight to the death until a last, bloodstained warrior adjusts their glasses and sends a company-wide email, informing the junior developers of their ascension?

Do they think a CTO can usually do developer work well?

This last statement may be the least plausible.

adelgado,
@adelgado@eu.mastodon.green avatar

@malin @nixCraft yeah, I always thought that too. Or maybe they think that a senior developer has to create a new company always (or die), so the number of companies increase with each developer that reach, 50 or something
