Everyone said get a Brother printer so I bought a 3-in-1 scanner and printer. There seems to be something wrong with it though. I plugged it into a Linux laptop, opened a document, pressed print, selected the printer, and it printed. Then I opened simple-scan, pressed scan, and it scanned.

This isn't how printers and scanners are supposed to work. Where do I install the drivers that don't work properly etc? This was no fun. I demand a refund.

    @JoeRess That's entirely your fault, you forgot to install Windows first.

    Try connecting it to your network, it works! Now you can scan your documents directly to your laptop without needing a freaking usb!!! It's magic!!!1!!

    @JoeRess same experience, it prints from windows, mac, linux, android and iOS… awful.

    @JoeRess plus you bought a 1TB ssd in anticipation of 20GB 'driver software' that the printer allegedly needs to 'work' - what will you do with all that empty disk space now :) ?

    @JoeRess I think I know what wrong. You connected the printer to a Linux device. I'm pretty sure this is your problem. 😉

    @JoeRess Yeah, it sucks. For years now I just throw the CD that comes with printers in the trash. There's no adventure. Just plug it in or connect over WiFi, yup, there's my printer, click and print awesomely. It's totally boring. But the print quality is mind-boggling.

    Driver? That words sounds familiar...

    Whatever happened to soldering up DB-25 connectors for RS-232, tracing out DTR, RTS, etc., X-ON, X-OFF, and all that? Sheesh, there aren't even any cables to solder anymore.

    Sigh.

    @JoeRess Honestly, I love how far Linux has come on the printer front! No driver download or manufacturer adware, just finds the printer (on wifi!) and lets me print to it or scan from it with no fuss.

    @JoeRess In duckduckgo, I have generally search 'brother printer driver linux' followed by the printer's model name. There is a tool you may download that will install the correct driver for you.

    @JoeRess genuine q. Which one did you get? (Need one and would prefer not to replicate the research)

    43W consumption in standby, 480W during activity. What is this, a cooking hob? Microwave?

    @albjerre@fosstodon.org avatar

    @knud @JoeRess @_TimTaylor I have a Brother laser printer with wifi connection. I measured the standby power consumption, which was very low. So I don't think the standby number here is correct.

    @albjerre @JoeRess @_TimTaylor

    Do you know the actual consumption number? I bought meter to plug into the socket and then the device into the meter and that can provide me with current power drawn or e.g. energy consumed over 24h (for devices with varying consumption like our fridge).

    @albjerre@fosstodon.org avatar

    @knud @JoeRess @_TimTaylor I cannot remember it. I saw that another one wrote the standby power comsumption is about 4.1 watts for the Brother printer mentioned. I think that sounds right considering that it has to have WiFi turned on.

    @albjerre @knud @_TimTaylor please untag me. Thanks.
