Dental crowns are one of those things that seem much more sophisticated than they are. They grind your tooth down to nothing and then glue a fake one on top.
@andrew@Doctor_J_ I know the word for pain in Chinese now. They are in my mouth 11 years and no complaints. My original root canal work was done in Northern Ireland and my latest fillings were done in Russia in 2021. I fell asleep when they were doing it in Russia @janestegerlewis cannot believe anyone can sleep at the dentists
@andrew aftr my mom's crown fell off when i was a kid and a buddy of mine, then another buddy of mine had root canals done on the wrong teeth, i stopped going to dentists.
it's super fucked up, i know, but i have not been in a dentist's chair since 1993.

Yeah, had that done recently as too.
There was some real artistry in matching the crown to the real teeth colors. But a lot of it felt like body work on a car with simple techniques dinner well.
Mine was a CEREC crown, so they made the thing in the like hour it took for them to grind the molar I had grown for myself to dust.
I unfortunately got a glimpse of the little 3D scan thing they do to fit the crown to the tooth and saw what it was turned into. Kind of a gum line-level little nothing with a groove down the middle.
They razed the house and plopped a pre-fab on top of the old foundation.

"CEREC crown" is an interesting term so I looked it up. Very cool that they can make it that quickly.
Mine had to be made by offsite dental technician so it took about a week. They did mold and make a temp crown for me the save day they ground down the original tooth though.
Yep, its semi new, I think. They scan the little stub they leave behind with what looks like a Dremel that plays a little music as it does its work. Then they go cut it from a block and bake it.
Not too bad, it was like a couple grand and then the dentist said something like "someday I may call on you" and kind of did a little dance and disappeared.

My wisdom teeth were actually extracted using a clamp device (vice-grips?). I don't know exactly what the tool was because it was covered with a sterile cloth when I walked in. And they also covered my eyes with a sterile cloth "to protect them from possible debris". I know they just didn't want me to see them coming at me with vice-grips! 😃 @andrew

The first three extractions went well. But on the fourth and final one the tooth fell out of the clamp and into the back of my throat. Thankfully my tongue automatically pressed it against the roof of my mouth so I didn't inhale it.
The dentist made panicked sounds but the assistant had the sense to grab me and set me upright as I gagged on the tooth. I coughed it out and heard it ricochet off the wall and across the tile floor. @andrew

Then I started laughing as I imagined the panicked look on the dentist's face.
They laid me back in the chair and finished up. When they uncovered my eyes I was still chuckling occasionally and the dentist was nowhere to be seen. I explained to the assistant why I was laughing still but they didn't find it humorous. @andrew
@gulovsen Its one of the few procedures I've witnessed where I thought I could totally “Catch Me If You Can" it and no one would know I wasn't a dentist.
I imagine if King Tut had work done on his teeth, it was done roughly the same way.
