A bit of an update to the Cineplex facial recognition/demanding masks be removed issue. I was at their Lansdowne theatre a couple of months ago to watch All of Us Strangers, obviously before this policy was adopted. But I won't be going back there, or to any Cineplex, while this policy exists.

@ckkellymartin This is so damn ominous.

@PacificNic It's like we're trapped inside a slowly unfolding dystopian novel with most people unaware of the early warning signs.

@ckkellymartin just like I'm tired of the hassle of going to a public movie showing, Cineplex seems to be tired of the hassle of showing movies. Do they make people remove hats, sunglasses or heavy makeup? Their security theatre is just one more reason to add to the pile of reasons not to go out to the movies. Going out to the movies used to be a weekly thing for me. Now, I can't remember the last movie I went to see. It's been years.

@ckkellymartin can’t help wondering if this is also an intimidation tactic — they make more money off concessions than off ticket sales (they only get a small fraction of ticket sales, but the mark-up on fountain pop and popcorn would make your head spin). Masked customers won’t be eating, will they?

(Neither will customers happily staying home and waiting for digital releases.)

@tantramar It feels that way but I don't understand how it helps them? Anyone still masking isn't going to start buying snacks because they've had to lower their mask. They'll either raise their mask again or simply stay away. Seems like a huge misstep on Cineplex's part. Personally, I never really bought the wildly overpriced concession offerings even before the pandemic.

@ckkellymartin I couldn’t agree more. if it were possible to distinguish between reasons and excuses here, we might see that it’s all about building a facial recognition database. See: https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/vending-machine-facial-analysis-invenda-waterloo-1.7126196

@tantramar I only found out about the U of Waterloo thing when I made my first Cineplex post a couple of weeks ago but I highly suspect this is what Cineplex is attempting, along with numerous other stores doing similar surveillance in the U.S. Look how Macy's facial recognition software worked out for this poor guy: https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/01/22/facial-recognition-wrongful-identification-assault/

@ckkellymartin 🤦‍♂️ As with AI-based nonsense, I can’t wait for this to blow up in their arrogant, selfish, foolish faces.

@tantramar @ckkellymartin Since when did it become legal to force people to reveal their faces so they could be scanned by software that stores their image?

Freedom, no?

@PacificNic @ckkellymartin Nobody’s forcing anyone to go to Cineplex.

PacificNic,
@PacificNic@zeroes.ca avatar

@tantramar @ckkellymartin I'm aware, and I have absolutely no interest in going to Cineplex anyway. I'm talking about the shuttering of services to anyone who chooses to continue to mask.

I just worry about where this is going. Now it's Cineplex under the auspices of security. What about when it's grocery stores?

The "freedom" comment is meant to be ironic.

@tantramar@nojack.easydns.ca avatar

@PacificNic @ckkellymartin I would expect banks to be the first to insist on unmasking. Service being a primary concern. 🙄

ckkellymartin,
@ckkellymartin@mstdn.ca avatar

@PacificNic @tantramar As someone who is still masking in public indoors and has no attention of stopping until we have better, more enduring protection from covid I find it very concerning.

trendless,
@trendless@zeroes.ca avatar

@ckkellymartin and so it begins -- the thin edge of the wedge, all because of "security" (read: surveillance)

If i wasnt so covid cautious, I’d show up in no mask but wearing a ballcap with IR LEDs in the brim.

@trendless Yep. I don't for a second buy that this is a security issue at most theatres. Have the instances cited occurred? Probably. But with the frequency that this extreme measure is required in all their Ontario theatres? Cineplex is just using the word 'security' for cover.

@ckkellymartin @trendless I'd say I'll boycott Cineplex, but I already am.
