About 17.6% of those surveyed by the U.S. Census Bureau in January said they'd experienced long COVID. Advocates, researchers & clinicians also reported seeing an increase in the number of people who'd developed long COVID after a 2nd or 3rd infection. https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/new-data-long-covid-cases-surge-2024a10005vv?form=fpf

I won't be seeing movies at @CineplexMovies while they're using facial recognition. The path they're on with this leads nowhere good. Macy's facial recognition falsely identified an innocent man who was then raped by 3 men in jail. https://www.thestreet.com/retail/macys-faces-lawsuit-in-false-arrest-due-to-facial-recognition-tec

Ottawa peeps, starting tomorrow you can get free solar eclipse glasses at the public library. Just 1 of a million reasons that the library is amazing! https://ottawa.ctvnews.ca/ottawa-public-library-to-provide-free-solar-eclipse-glasses-for-residents-1.6824627

Got my MMR titer results yesterday and thankfully my immunity levels are good. Doctor said I shouldn't need a booster for 15 to 20 years. This was a relief as I'd had to get a 3rd shot 20 years ago due to waning immunity.

A bit of an update to the Cineplex facial recognition/demanding masks be removed issue. I was at their Lansdowne theatre a couple of months ago to watch All of Us Strangers, obviously before this policy was adopted. But I won't be going back there, or to any Cineplex, while this policy exists.

ckkellymartin,
@ckkellymartin@mstdn.ca avatar

@trendless Yep. I don't for a second buy that this is a security issue at most theatres. Have the instances cited occurred? Probably. But with the frequency that this extreme measure is required in all their Ontario theatres? Cineplex is just using the word 'security' for cover.

ckkellymartin,
@ckkellymartin@mstdn.ca avatar

@tantramar It feels that way but I don't understand how it helps them? Anyone still masking isn't going to start buying snacks because they've had to lower their mask. They'll either raise their mask again or simply stay away. Seems like a huge misstep on Cineplex's part. Personally, I never really bought the wildly overpriced concession offerings even before the pandemic.

@tantramar I only found out about the U of Waterloo thing when I made my first Cineplex post a couple of weeks ago but I highly suspect this is what Cineplex is attempting, along with numerous other stores doing similar surveillance in the U.S. Look how Macy's facial recognition software worked out for this poor guy: https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/01/22/facial-recognition-wrongful-identification-assault/

@PacificNic @tantramar As someone who is still masking in public indoors and has no attention of stopping until we have better, more enduring protection from covid I find it very concerning.

@PacificNic It's like we're trapped inside a slowly unfolding dystopian novel with most people unaware of the early warning signs.

Just got a call where the caller said he was calling me from "your internet department." Cool! I have an internet department? I wonder what other departments I have and am unaware of?

eye roll. Oh please.

Ottawa's not quite in the 115-mile-wide path of totality but we'll be at 99% eclipse for 2 to 3 minutes around 3.25 on the 8th and I just ordered some solar eclipse glasses so I can rush outside and stare up at the disappearing sun without any worries.

That folks born over '70 have been exposed to Measles 'wisdom' I keep hearing is garbage. I'm born in '68 and almost everyone I know born around the same time has not had measles. If this is you get your MMR titers checked if you can.

ckkellymartin,
@ckkellymartin@mstdn.ca avatar

@cshlan I was checked in 2004 and had to get another MMR shot then because I had no immunity, despite childhood vaccination. I'm hearing similar things from quite a few other people. Unfortunately, immunity doesn't seem to be all that durable. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10768653/#:~:text=The%20overall%20mean%20measles%20antibody,17.2%E2%80%93190.5)%20by%20CLIA

Major privacy and health issues with Cineplex in Ontario. This chain is now an unsafe, hostile place for anyone with health issues or who wants to avoid them. Also disturbing that they're using a system that wants to ID customers with facial recognition.

Cineplex chat log with a live agent: "We are requesting you lower the masks for security purposes after the facial recognition can ID you can place the mask on."

@deewani Yeah, I'm the same. I only go to showings where there's a super small audience usually. No snacks and I keep my N95 on. If I lived in TO I'd love to go to this and feel safe in a crowd for once. Guess I'll be seeing Dune 2 in May :)

ckkellymartin,
@ckkellymartin@mstdn.ca avatar

@deewani Hah - you too! It looks so good. My MO: I scope out the seating online before I show up at the theatre and only go if few people have actually booked. Then I wait until the trailers are playing to arrive and pick out my seats to ensure no one is close by. "Hopefully they come up with better vaxxes/treatments in future." I'm counting on this too!
