If you could wave a magic wand and make one of these things disappear forever, which would it be? ATM I’m leaning towards No. 2 sadly 🤢

gedeonm,
@gedeonm@mastodon.social avatar

I’m going to lose my two month long move and exercise streak because the activity app doesn’t allow for rest or sick days. I hate that so much.

NickFerg,
@NickFerg@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm I’m still pissed I lost my almost one year streak last December because I had Covid.

donkey,
@donkey@mastodon.nz avatar

@gedeonm Yeah, that sucks. Just spent a week hobbling around home/hardly moving because of my back. Would be nice to have the fitness app say “hey, you’re not moving much and seem to be unwell - wanna pause your streaks?”

Hope you feel better soon, friend.

@patrickmcconnell@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm I lost a 4 year streak for a surgical proceedure. On the bright side I no longer feel a slave to the rings.

KingShawn,
@KingShawn@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm I find that so annoying that Apple hasn’t or won’t make arrangements for those kinds of things. It should be trivial to do.

I also hate they can’t/won’t allow you to set different targets for different days. Mon-Fri is hard for “normal” people to get a lot of exercise in. The weekend isn’t. So let me set different targets and goals for different days. Come on, Apple… 🤦🏼‍♂️

cmaier,
@cmaier@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm I lost my many-years streak on day 3 of covid. I was too weak to get out of bed.

In the end, probably was good so that now I don’t worry about the streak so much.

stegrainer,
@stegrainer@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm That’s why I really like MyTrends++ by David Smith. If you miss a day, you don’t lose the streak. (I think it used to be called Fitness++, but he probably changed it when Fitness+ came out.)

chrisdejabet,
@chrisdejabet@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm I also hate it when that happens. Two things I want from watchOS 11 are rest days (think Pedometer++), and automatic pause/resume for outdoor walking workouts like it does for running and cycling. /cc @lorihc

@gedeonm my wife got mad cos it also doesn’t care about pregnancies

@bed Ooooof.

@gedeonm You can pop in and edit your targets and reset them for when you're back up and at it.

CStamp,
@CStamp@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm Strap the watch on your dog and let it run in the yard? :)

I hope you're feeling better soon. It's important to just rest on sick days, so, yeah, you! If your app won't validate you, I will, FWIW. :)

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm I wrote about this last year. https://www.stuff.tv/features/i-lost-my-streak-and-now-want-apple-watch-to-find-some-humanity/

Once I lost that streak, which was well over a year old, I just thought nuts to it. Since then, I’ve been experimenting with other systems. Streaks Workout is obviously fab. But Gentler Streak is good too, albeit in part locked behind a sub.

RichelleTrickel,
@RichelleTrickel@twit.social avatar

@craiggrannell @gedeonm I went to Gentler Streak when I had a tendon injury that put me out for 3 months. It lets me mark sick or injured days, has TONS of workout types, and suggests activities you’ve done before to meet your day’s needs. It will suggest a lighter day if you didn’t sleep well. And as a lady I appreciate that it takes into consideration energy changes from hormonal cycles. Honestly surprised Apple is not stealing from this app. Worth the sub.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@RichelleTrickel @gedeonm All of that. And I like that it tells you to chill out a bit if your activity level shoots up. The Insights tab is really nicely done as well – the activity recaps are fun and friendly. Again, it’s the sort of thing I’d expect from Apple but that Apple is not providing.

Full disclosure: I was provided with a sub for review purposes (and it took me a good long while to get around to that). But I’m tempted to continue with it when the sub is up.

gedeonm,
@gedeonm@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell I seriously do not understand why Apple, even after all these years, has not built rest days or more importantly sick days into the Activity app. It’s pretty darned heartless and a piss poor user experience. cc @Pschiller

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm @Pschiller I remember talking to an Apple PR about this at the last in-person WWDC. They were adamant that it was vitally important to be “consistent”. But the system is robotic. Moreover, it is dangerous. Marathon runners eg shouldn’t be running the next day. It’s also not good for accessibility, because you can’t swap out the rings eg if you are unable to meet the “exercise” goal.

I find it hugely frustrating. And judging by how widely that Stuff piece was shared, we’re not alone.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm @Pschiller I was so downhearted by the screw-up and broken streak that I gave up. And I never restarted. Which is probably better from a mental health standpoint anyway. But had the Apple system been more flexible – just a little – this wouldn’t have been a problem. Gentler Streak gets it. That app is human. Apple could learn an awful lot from it (and also from the ‘x days in y’ and pause features in Streaks). Oh, and from Eugene Jarvis, who said failure in games should be recoverable.

jeridansky,
@jeridansky@sfba.social avatar

@gedeonm Sorry about the food poisoning; I hope you feel better soon.

@gedeonm I think mosquitos then hurricanes cause more damage to life and property TBH. But an option for Trump would’ve been popular.

ejrolon,
@ejrolon@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm so an atmospheric event that can kill and destroy a huge area is less than inconveniences?

gedeonm,
@gedeonm@mastodon.social avatar

@ejrolon I wouldn’t call Malaria, botulism, Salmonella and E. coli “inconveniences” but your mileage may vary. 🤷‍♂️

ejrolon,
@ejrolon@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm but those are above food poisoning or maybe my english is betraying me. 👍

@gedeonm I definitely dont want DST to go away. I want it to be the permanent replacement of standard time.

@gedeonm Hope you feel better soon!

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm

Mosquitoes: a friend works with those, and she is VERY keen on outlining how vital they are to the world.

Food poisoning: obvs

DST: I bloody love it. Live for it. GMT in the winter leaves me with mild depression.

Hurricanes: close second to food poisoning.

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell Sounds like I need to do some personal ignorance reduction because mosquitoes are definitely top of that list to eradicate for me :)

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@GeekAndDad In short, if we killed them all, we’re looking at some severe ecosystem collapse. (Lots of things eat them. And it’s uncertain how their void would be filled.) My friend is part of an effort looking at ways of making them safer for humans.

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell Thanks for the executive summary! Figured it was something like that since they aren’t pollinators as far as I’m aware.
