What's a budget decent microphone for use in streaming/recording speech that won't break the bank and is available to order swiftly into Germany?

Thanks!

Thank you so much for all the suggestions and advice!

In the end I found one that I'd previously been recommended at a good price: https://www.thomann.de/de/mackie_em_91cu.htm

Certainly if I was starting a podcast or regular streaming, I'd be taking more care in this - there's some great advice here - hopefully it'll help others too :)

@sarajw Mackie++

@sarajw only caveat is USB-B

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@janl doesn't bother me - nice solid connector

@sarajw cool cool!

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@janl it's cool that things have coalesced around usb-c but I come from the years of needing a special charger for every different device so I'm like eh

@aiken@social.lol avatar

@sarajw ooh. awesome! I was looking for one too. ☺️ Maybe I will wait for you to test it and share your opinion.

Are you planning to do some podcasts/live streaming?

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@aiken no, just giving a talk online and need to not sound like potato

@sarajw With some years of experience recording and producing podcasts, I’d recommend any dynamic USB microphone that just looks nice to you. This one is my favorite out of the least expensive https://www.amazon.de/-/en/Audio-Technica-2100x-Streaming-Podcast-microphone/dp/B086CTJC3L/ USB means that you won’t need an additional audio interface to connect it to your computer. The dynamic part is also important for better sound in acoustically untreated or just noisy rooms. I’d suggest staying clear of any condenser mics, especially gaming ones with RGB nonsense.

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@pepelsbey I'll just delete the pretty RGB one out of my basket then 🫣

I'm still wondering if that price is overkill for me. I'm not about to start regularly streaming or podcasting really...

pepelsbey,
@pepelsbey@mastodon.social avatar

@sarajw I have a bunch of RGB-lit keyboards myself, but I still can’t get over brands putting LEDs into microphones 🙄

There is a cheaper option: https://www.amazon.de/-/en/AUD-AT2005USB/dp/B007JX8O0Y/ It’s the previous generation of the same mic.

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@pepelsbey thank you! Would that need a shield thing to deal with pops and stuff?

noleli,
@noleli@mastodon.social avatar

@sarajw i’d pitch my employer’s products, but they’re probably a bit too spendy for what you’re looking for

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@noleli possibly!

@noleli deffo on the spendy side, but thanks anyway :)

@sarajw You might want to check out @chantastic's guide at https://chan.dev/microphones/ — I used the Samson Q2U on Chan's recommendation for a while, and it worked perfectly fine without breaking the bank.

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@ben @sarajw Most of the Samson USB mics are absolutely fine, yeah. If you want something a tad more modern the Rode USB-mini is worth looking at, as well

mrtrimble,
@mrtrimble@front-end.social avatar

@ben @sarajw @chantastic I bought the Samson Q2 on your recommendation and it has been great!

@mrtrimble @sarajw @chantastic I also used the Fifine K678 for a bit, for an even more budget-friendly option - also totally fine!

@ben @mrtrimble @sarajw i haven't updated the post but my new favorite budget pick is the FiFine K688

really great all round typically sub-$70

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@chantastic @ben @mrtrimble thank you! Gosh they have so many different models - just come across this which seems like a steal, different model though: https://www.otto.de/p/fifine-mikrofon-usb-kondensator-mikrofon-pc-streaming-studio-mikrofon-S0F2H0KN/#variationId=S0F2H0KNSVA5

@sarajw I have a Røde NT-USB which works well. I used to use it for twitch streaming, but now it’s mostly used for zoom meetings lol

They do a mini version of that which is cheaper I believe.

@sarajw Thomann has a great selection of professional equipment, even for small budget. For example

@frederic Ah thomann's a good shout

@sarajw This is what I use for podcasting https://www.amazon.co.uk/Razer-Seiren-Mini-Microphone-Supercardioid/dp/B08GP28B4N/ Not sure about availability in Germany though

@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@robb Seeing one for 43€, looks good
