My iPhone 15 Pro doesn't hold onto USB-C cables very well anymore, and they always fall out or flake out.

(And I only use the USB-C port for Xcode and travel charging, so it's not from overuse.)

Anyone else have this happen? Is this most likely a "crap in the port” 5-minute-fix-at-an-Apple-store situation, or a hardware-repair I'll-be-without-my-phone-for-some-days-and-need-to-move-into-an-old-one situation?

@marcoarment to my eye (with magnification) the retention features on USB-C seem to have less engagement as compared to lightening.

@marcoarment pocket lint, you can just go to any random place and get it fixed. I just did it for $20. Don’t let them change any parts, Apple for that, but they can tell you by pointing a flashlight at it when you drop it off.

joeagain,

@marcoarment usually just junk that gets compressed in there over time. The little keyboard cleaning brushes are a great safe way to dislodge it. Mine came with cheap Logitech keyboard iirc

@marcoarment I realize this doesn't help you right now, but I've been using dust plugs like these for years to prevent lint buildup and have never had to clean my port due to a bad connection. Since I mostly charge wirelessly, they're not too much of a hassle.

@marcoarment Had this happen to me on an older lightning iPhone. Cleaning out the port with a toothpick did the trick, cable would stay put after that.

@marcoarment This is exactly why I, although it was necessary, did not look forward to the USB-C transition: physically, it's a downgrade compared to Lightning.

So congrats all, we made it worse. And better. But also worse.

vojtastanek,

@marcoarment I cut a piece of plastic from a yogurt cup or something similarly thin and sturdy and get a considerable amount of compressed dust out from the connector. Just did it this morning since my iPhone wouldn't change...

matthendricks,

@marcoarment I started having the same issue a few months ago and not sure when it started because I only use it for CarPlay. Tried gently cleaning it with a toothpick but no luck.

@marcoarment clean it with this. Use a cheap USB microscope with a light to see what you’re doing:

@tomhannen @marcoarment That seems to be intended for glue removal, not cleaning the port. I wouldn't try that first. Or maybe you linked wrong item.

@marcoarment Probably lint keeping the cord from going in all the way. Clean out the port with a toothpick.

@marcoarment

That has always been a concern for me- I haven’t been excited about the switch to usb-c form factor, nor qi charging.

My lighting cable has always served as a tether, to fish out the phone that has falen under furniture, between couch cushions

@marcoarment I had this happen with an iPhone that had a lightning port (maybe 7 Plus). I took it to the Apple Store and the person suspected it was lint jammed in there. They brought my iPhone to the back to clean it out. When my iPhone was given back, I was told there was a lot of lint in there. The Apple Store has a tool to remove stuff like that from the port (what I was told). Never had it happen before or since then with different iPhones.

@marcoarment @siracusa - Any comment on this “-“ situation?

@marcoarment I've gotten "Water Detected" warnings on my 15 Pro Max on days where I haven't been anywhere near water. I'm guessing those are caused by crap-in-port as well…

@marcoarment Try a wooden toothpick to get crap out. This happens to my lightning port.

@marcoarment “Crap in the port” is an excellent song title

@marcoarment I got yogurt in my phone port the other day and apple had some special device to fix it in about 5-10 minutes but I was told even if they had to replace it they could do it in like an hour.

@marcoarment usually lint in port. I scrape it out with a paper clip. Maybe not the best tool considering the electrical nature but it works. Maybe power down the phone before cleaning.
