I saw a post yesterday questioning why the U.S. is investing in projects for electric vehicles but not investing in public transportation. That’s just false.

First, we aren’t getting rid of cars. We are too spread out and it’s doubtful that public transportation will be available in entirely where everyone, everywhere, at every time of day will need it. And we will always need vehicles for emergency services like ambulances and fire trucks and mail delivery and farms. 1/4

We can and should shift vehicles away from fossil fuels. We can and should reduce the need for excess driving of personal vehicles possible, responsibly.

However, to say that the U.S isn’t investing in public transportation is just false.

Here are just a few examples out of a long list.

@TonyStark Trouble is, a widespread shift from petroleum fuel to lithium batteries won't improve anything & in some ways will make it worse. For lithium, the ocean floors will be raped and its creatures massively slaughtered. What the US will do to Brazil and Australia will strongly resemble what we did to Iraq.

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@wattdefalk Well, most of what you’re saying here is hyperbole with no evidence or backup for anyone to read but I’ll be nice and share what’s actually going on in technological advancement in this area. This is one article. I could share quite a few.

There are solutions to this that are extremely efficient and will solve multiple problems at once.

Making batteries takes lots of lithium: Almost half of it could come from Pennsylvania wastewater:

@TonyStark Thank you for improving my limited understanding. I limit my following of the news, and what little my aging brain remembers tends to gravitate to the worst. (And sorry for sounding so trumping certain)

TonyStark,

@wattdefalk All good. I am someone who cares deeply about the environment and I work in that area. I just want to also be clear that I am very concerned about the health of the planet and think addressing that is the most important issue we have.

@TonyStark @wattdefalk How great it would be to have Marcellus Shale be a solution already and not just a problem.

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@MariaHill @wattdefalk Sure would.

May I just say that many fascinating and useful developments come out of the field of wastewater. An unsung hero.

@TonyStark meanwhile my county rep, Jim Desmond, cares more about adding lanes to freeway as an answer to congestion. He opposes many mass transit options, favoring larger roads and more cars. He’s against funding for mass transit. My view, make mass transit free to all. It’s not supposed to be a profit center.

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@sigsegv I didn’t know who that was so I looked him up. What a tool.

Sorry that’s your representation. Everyone thinks CA is totally liberal but there’s a weird contingency of antisocietal Republicans into killing our planet as quickly as possible.

I agree with you on the non-profit aspect for public transit. I’d love that for public services in general.

WhiteCatTamer,
@WhiteCatTamer@mastodon.online avatar

@TonyStark @sigsegv I like to point out in discussions on the Electoral College that there are more Republicans in California who are being disenfranchised by being in California than there exist in several red states combined.

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@WhiteCatTamer @sigsegv Republicans don’t appear to be at all interested in voter representation.
