"There was no way I could support the Democratic presidential nominee, Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey. Only years later did I realize that I was mistaken, and we missed an opportunity to have a president who might actually have made America great by championing racial justice, labor rights, and the war against poverty."

Abandoning Biden could repeat the 1968 mistakes that helped elect Nixon

I'm muting this thread. Please feel free to respond to any new replies on why Gaza is the only thing that can ever matter in the world.

zdl,
@zdl@mastodon.online avatar

@joeinwynnewood Here's a thought from the outside view.

Instead of threatening dire consequences ELECT LEADERSHIP THAT INSPIRES, YOU FUCKING AMERICAN DOLTS! The Democrats have relied on that old schtick of "sure we're bad, but the other guy is worse!" for so long it's simply stopped working.

The American left is easily as dysfunctional and idiotic as the American right. They're just mildly more pleasant as people.

Sometimes.

joeinwynnewood,
@joeinwynnewood@mstdn.social avatar

@zdl

Aside from your living in the PRC glass house, there's a whole lot of inspiration in Biden's ending 40 years of Reagonomics and completely reordering the focus of American government on the well-being of everyday people.

The problem is that every time we talk about it certain people reply with GENOCIDE!! NOTHING ELSE MATTERS!!! which is bullshit.

zdl,
@zdl@mastodon.online avatar

@joeinwynnewood Yes. I live in the PRC where I literally don't have a choice: neither as a non-citizen nor even as a citizen were I one of them. I have no say (and would have no say) whatsoever in who is in government or what the government does short of armed insurrection.

You live in a country where, as imperfect at the systems are, you DO have a choice. And you consistently choose shit governments that get shittier over time because you're more intent on "the other guys" than yourselves.

joeinwynnewood,
@joeinwynnewood@mstdn.social avatar

@zdl

That's 100% crap.

Biden has made a huge sea change in the economic model being applied to government action.

Biden and Democrats have made the largest direct investment in the world, ever, in renewable energy implementation and technology development.

His government has provided support for unions not seen since FDR.

No one can fix 40 years of neoliberal economic policy in 3 or 4 or 5 years, but Biden has set a course to fix it over time.

The GOP would undo all of it.

zdl,
@zdl@mastodon.online avatar

@joeinwynnewood I go back to pointing to "inspiration".

Whether he's done good or not, it doesn't help if he doesn't fire up his fan base. Even before he fumbled (pratfalled) so badly on the Palestinians, Biden was not firing up the fan base.

Nobody in the Democrats was. Because the Democrats systematically ousted anybody who could.

Nobody who counts in an election—the voters—was fired up by the Democrat messaging and now they're paying the price. Enjoy your four more years of Trump.

LALegault,
@LALegault@newsie.social avatar

@joeinwynnewood @IveyJanette

I appreciate the 14,000 warnings that come across my TL daily about not abandoning Biden as much as the next Canadian but dear god man, there is an easy way to fix this and get him to stop facilitating a genocide. That’s what undecided voters want.

joeinwynnewood,
@joeinwynnewood@mstdn.social avatar

@LALegault @IveyJanette

Aside from Biden's recent actions to do exactly that (which I've seen exactly zero acknowledgement of from anyone claiming it's the one and only basis for withholding their support), how do you set aside the orders of magnitude greater moral imperative presented by the global climate disaster Trump will precipitate if elected?

LALegault,
@LALegault@newsie.social avatar

@joeinwynnewood @IveyJanette

Genocide isn’t an aside. It is the the worst thing imaginable.

joeinwynnewood,
@joeinwynnewood@mstdn.social avatar

@LALegault @IveyJanette

The problem is your indiscriminate use of the term genocide.
What's happened in Gaza is horrible, but doesn't begin to compare to the Holodomor, or the Khmer Rouge's killing fields, or the Shoah, and will be even smaller next to the coming horror of climate disasters should America turn the fossil-fuel industry loose to do whatever they want as Trump has promised.

It is beyond irresponsible to ignore the full ramifications of allowing Trump to become president again.

micchiato,
@micchiato@mastodon.social avatar

@joeinwynnewood @LALegault

If only you’d applied the same parsing logic you employ on to the article’s comparison of 2024 to 1968. Unlike LBJ, has not dropped out of the race. LBJ’s high disapprovals were due to Vietnam; Biden’s disapprovals were high well before Oct7. Biden has no historic civil rights and voting rights legislation victories to shore up his progressive wing (in fact he fumbled his promise to codify Roe). Harris is not Humphrey. Nixon created the EPA, etc, etc

joeinwynnewood,
@joeinwynnewood@mstdn.social avatar

@micchiato @LALegault

The comparison that matters is Nixon and Trump.

Nixon precipitated the Khmer Rouge's rise to power and the subsequent death of 2 million.

Is that not reason enough to think several times before contributing to a Trump presidency that could easily lead to the death of 100s of millions?

My point, which those stuck on Gaza willfully miss, is not the language used to describe the war, it's refusing to consider that allowing Trump to win would be far worse.

GreenFire,
@GreenFire@mstdn.social avatar

@joeinwynnewood @micchiato @LALegault @davbram
There is one clear fact about Gaza. Global warming will not be good for Gaza.

Not supporting Joe Biden right now is pure unadulterated climate science denial or in best possible light ignorance about global warming.

The difference between the DNC and GOP on climate and energy policy is crystal clear and obvious. Since global warming is an existential crisis we have to do everything we can to avoid as much of it as we can.

tadbithuman,

@joeinwynnewood Maybe Biden should be told to abandon genocide by all these concern trolls.

joeinwynnewood,
@joeinwynnewood@mstdn.social avatar

@tadbithuman

Concern troll? Really?

So we should ignore the lessons of history and blindly repeat fostering far greater death and destruction?

That seems a rather poor argument.

PS Why are you pretending Biden has not acted to stop a full scale incursion into Rafa?

tadbithuman,

@joeinwynnewood
I'm not calling you a concern troll.

Biden gave Israel all the weaponry and political cover to carry out the genocide, pretending he's got and red lines with Israel is like the American dream. I give all the credit to butcher Biden for the genocide.

joeinwynnewood, (edited )
@joeinwynnewood@mstdn.social avatar

@tadbithuman

So Sinwar/Hamas & Netanyahu are all to be held harmless and Trump is irrelevant?

Your calculus is morally bankrupt.

Muting your myopia.

davbram,
@davbram@ravenation.club avatar

@joeinwynnewood committing racist atrocities as a Democrat seems to be the mistake. The loss of votes from the lefties and other people without stomach for gore and carnage is a natural consequence

joeinwynnewood,
@joeinwynnewood@mstdn.social avatar

@davbram

The refusal to go with the lesser of two evils inevitably results in tremendous evil being unleashed.

It's quite insane to ignore the lessons of multiple historical experiences that 100% prove this to be true.

davbram,
@davbram@ravenation.club avatar

@joeinwynnewood I agree we should learn the lessons from these historical instances. Lets Get out the Vote™!!! Lets see, have young people ever been successfully mobilized to vote for someone who belittles and patronizes them while ignoring their calls for peace and justice (even banning their favorite app for chrissakes)... even if the other guy wants to use live ammo on them?

davbram,
@davbram@ravenation.club avatar

@joeinwynnewood Maybe we could start by shaming them for not being willing to vote against their conscience. Just brainstorming here.

davbram,
@davbram@ravenation.club avatar

@joeinwynnewood Hint, The problem isn't the masses of young people. The problem is the messaging. "Vote more evil" is the wrong message.
"Don't break any windows, antisemite" is the wrong message. "Joe in the White House is the best chance for Palestinian statehood in our lifetime." Good. "Vote Joe if you care about the safety of the protestors." Also good. America would be a better place if Dems didn't suck so bad at this.

joeinwynnewood,
@joeinwynnewood@mstdn.social avatar

@davbram

Those messages are being spread as well. It isn't one or the other, it is both.

joeinwynnewood,
@joeinwynnewood@mstdn.social avatar

@davbram

When did Biden belittle protesters or ignore them?

What is he doing right now?

raven667,
@raven667@hachyderm.io avatar

@joeinwynnewood @davbram so many proclaimed leftists who say they want the best for the country and the world have delusions about the kind of people which make up the electorate and public in general. There is a common underlying assumption that the inequality, injustice and inaction are being forced on everyone against their will by forces outside of anyone's control, but in reality near 50% of the electorate will actively choose injustice (perceived in their favor), they aren't being forced.

raven667,
@raven667@hachyderm.io avatar

@joeinwynnewood @davbram Changing public opinion and changing culture of people who will actively choose injustice when given the chance is the problem, not just the small number with resources and power to enact their fantasies, although the people with power who do harm must be stopped, the mass who protect them must be changed, not by violence by by social dominance. Peoples bigoted opinions need to go back in the closet and pretend to be decent folk again, practice makes perfect

joeinwynnewood,
@joeinwynnewood@mstdn.social avatar

@raven667 @davbram

Well said.

Well meaning people working to put open bigotry back in the closet and white supremacists back under their rock are far from perfect and will inevitably fuck up, sometimes badly; they're human.

Insisting that no fuck-ups are allowed by the mostly good guys is going to kill us all.

tuckerm,
@tuckerm@saltylike.us avatar

@joeinwynnewood @davbram Especially since the most recent example was just a few years ago. I remember some people acting like there was no difference between Trump and Hillary Clinton. No one could possibly still believe that after seeing a Trump presidency.
