Thanks, everyone. I say "social web" mostly, since it's the name we used for the working group at W3C for developing the standards that make this network possible.
However, I also call it the Fediverse when I'm discussing it with people who prefer that term.
@evan I think I prefer "social web" but didn't know it was a term that I could use to refer to the Fediverse, so I voted fedi.
Was just at a conference where I like to think I convinced a couple of people to join in :) the idea of instances being silos is still floating around...
@evan they've got different meanings to me. fediverse is specifically the federated parts, activitypub et al. social web can mean any interoperable interlinked part, not necessarily federated.
I feel Fediverse sounds like a unique brand. I get that Social Web feels more descriptive but I think it is tainted by being too close to Social Media.
On the other hand, you do need to explain the term Fediverse. But I also think you need to explain social web as well. I don’t think it is as explanatory as it might appear at first blush.
Finally, at least internally, I feel like Fediverse is too deeply ingrained. It would take a massive culture shift to change the term.
