iamcanehdian,

Accurate. The resurgence of a disease we got rid of lays squarely on the shoulders of idiots.

@iamcanehdian

Don't blame people who are badly educated and frightened.

Blame the people who broke what little trust the people used to have in the healthcare system by turning it into a casino more focused on profit than public health. Those are the idiots we need to worry about.

@violetmadder @iamcanehdian The fools buying into conspiracy theories deserve their share of blame too. They aren’t babes in the woods with no way of knowing any better.

@jjLitke @iamcanehdian

Sure, but the rich and powerful who got us into this mess like to use them as distracting scapegoats.

cmsdengl,
@cmsdengl@mas.to avatar

@violetmadder @iamcanehdian We have anti-vaxx idiots in countries like the UK where healthcare is free at the point of use. So it ain't all evil insurance companies.

violetmadder,
@violetmadder@kolektiva.social avatar

@cmsdengl @iamcanehdian

The UK bungled covid response just like the US did, and the NHS is under attack by people trying to wreck it so it can be privatized-- so you're not far behind us. There will always be people nervous about vaccines, but the problem gets magnified when healthcare institutions aren't trustworthy.

rosamundi,
@rosamundi@mastodon.world avatar

@violetmadder @cmsdengl @iamcanehdian our problems with antivaxxers started long before covid. We have struggled with MMR uptake since at least Andrew Wakefield.

@rosamundi @violetmadder @cmsdengl @iamcanehdian back in the 1990s the poster disease for anti vaxers was idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.

Anti vaxers have been at this for a long time.

I find the folks particularly being against whooping cough vaccines evil. Especially when they peddle homeopathic alternatives.

meena,

@onepict @rosamundi @violetmadder @cmsdengl @iamcanehdian it feels disingenuous to lay this onto the shoulders of "idiots" when there's whole industries profiting from this fear mongering.

all our processes to deal with these kind of misinformation machines are laid bare when we just consider how long it took The Lancet to retract Wakefield's paper

The standard medicine to woo pipeline starts with doctors.
Misogynist, gaslighting doctors ignore pain, disabling conditions, and fatal disease in a person with a uterus. That person has a child. They don't trust a damned word about vaccines from some asshole who diagnoses women with hysteria that turns out to be endometriosis, autoimmune disease, heart attacks, cancer, etc.

Remember from Twitter?

@onepict @violetmadder @cmsdengl @iamcanehdian my mum has genuine trauma from nursing me, my brother, and our dad through whooping cough. She is still, more than 40 years later, furious with the mother of the girl we caught it off for not cancelling the play date when she knew her daughter was infectious.

dmbaturin,
@dmbaturin@functional.cafe avatar

@rosamundi @onepict @violetmadder @cmsdengl @iamcanehdian Wait, you caught it despite being vaccinated?

rosamundi,
@rosamundi@mastodon.world avatar

@dmbaturin @onepict @violetmadder @cmsdengl @iamcanehdian I wasn't vaccinated, the GP refused to do it because I had multiple allergies and the vaccines were grown on egg protein. Same for my brother.

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@rosamundi @dmbaturin @violetmadder @cmsdengl @iamcanehdian

Which is why the rest of us need to vaccinate if we can. Because some of us can't, but it's also why if infected people need to isolate.

It was an awful thing to do to you and your mother.

@onepict @rosamundi @violetmadder @cmsdengl @iamcanehdian Some people keep asking me why I get a flu shot every year even though I'm not at risk for getting any serious complications from flu.
Well, because there are people who are at risk!
