Grizzly bears were pillaging farms. Could a canine keep them away?

Researchers test whether guard dogs could keep growing number of bears off Montana farms

rosamundi,
@rosamundi@mastodon.world avatar

@kim_harding this seems like old news? I grew up with two Pyrenean Mountain Dogs. They were bred to protect sheep from bears and wolves in the Pyrenees, and if they don't have sheep to protect, they pivot seamlessly to protecting the weird two-legged sheep they've been landed with.
They're also used in the USA to protect livestock against coyotes and other predators.

Bucket portraits

It's the head and shoulders of a large fluffy sheep viewed from above as he eats food out of a red bucket. It's Lucky! His head fills the bottom half of the picture pretty much but we can't see his face as it's buried in the bucket eating. His ears aren't as big as Brambles' but they still extend over the sides of the bucket. You can see a hint of pink and black on the tops of his ears but they are mostly covered in white fur. The rims of his ears are visibly whiter and hairier. The wool on top of his head is curly; higher up we see the wool on his neck is less curly and open in parts allowing a view down to the surface of the sheep.
It's another large white sheep viewed from above, eating from a green bucket - it's Skippy! Again we can't see his face as he is busy stuffing himself. His head is in the lower half of the picture and he's slightly off-centre with respect to his bucket, a bit off to the left. His ears are smaller than those of Brambles or Lucky and would probably fit in the bucket if he were centred. Each ear has one spot and one ear tag on it. His head looks hard and large, because it is, and he uses it to maintain his position as boss of the flock. His wool is shorter than that of some of the fluffier boys but it is quite dense. He smells gently of ram.
An overhead view of a very fluffy white sheep eating from a yellow bucket - it's Panda! His head is at the bottom of the image and it's slightly off-centre with respect to his bucket, off to the right a bit. We can't see any features of his face, as he is stuffing himself, but we can just see the odd tuft of extra wool he has on his forehead. We can't see his little ears at all as they are obscured by his voluminous, fluffy fleece. From this angle he looks like a big fluffy egg. A fluffy egg you'd want to cuddle.

rosamundi,
@rosamundi@mastodon.world avatar

@llamasoft_ox could I, theoretically, cuddle the fluffy egg or is it a trap?

"the person who said, or rather typed, offhandedly โ€œpeople should bike moreโ€ really means all people need to bike everywhere under all circumstances and is callously indifferent to people who: live in Siberia and canโ€™t bike through -40 blizzards; are physically unable to cycle; canโ€™t afford bikes; and let us not forget those who have bicycle-related trauma. Which is why anyone who could say โ€œpeople should bike moreโ€ is a fascist who needs crushing."

@onepict @violetmadder @cmsdengl @iamcanehdian my mum has genuine trauma from nursing me, my brother, and our dad through whooping cough. @dmbaturin @onepict @violetmadder @cmsdengl @iamcanehdian I wasn't vaccinated, the GP refused to do it because I had multiple allergies and the vaccines were grown on egg protein. Same for my brother.

"nearly 99% of respondents to an official consultation said they were happy with kilos and litres." That's one in the eye for the brexit ultras who thought the country was gagging to bring back pounds and ounces.

I cook and sew in imperial, because my mum taught me those things and that's how she learned. I do everything else in metric because that's what I learned in school. Schools haven't taught imperial measurements since the 1980s.

rosamundi,

@kentindell I know 4 ounces is about 100g so I can sort it out from there. With feet and inches, 60" is about 150cm and 45" is about 115cm, because those are the standard widths fabric is sold in. Anything outside baking or sewing I use metric, because I'm not 93 years old.
