At tonight’s #Scouting court of honor, our emeritus scout leader who’s been with the troop 40 years saw me wearing my Inclusive Scouting knot (knots are award patches for adults and they’re a bit more subtle than kids ranks).
“What does that knot mean?” he asked.
“It’s in memory of all the Scouts from previous generations who couldn’t participate because they were atheists or gay. It’s very much not official, but I wear it anyway”
“Oh, interesting”, he said.
Two days in the woods, messing around, botanizing, greeting spring ephemerals and returning migrants like old friends. Eating ramps on fire cooked hotdogs under 125 ft tall white oaks. Meeting an 85 yr old land steward who still plans for the future. Watching the scouts play, learn, read, breathe in the wild. Soul refreshing. I want this for every one.
Eerst opkomst draaien met de kleintjes, daarna zijn we zelf aan de beurt!
Met de kleintjes werken we aan een insigne (natuur!) En zelf willen we pizza bakken op het kampvuur!
Beautiful day at scout camp. Forecasted to be 58 °F (14 °C ) for our winter Klondike camporee. No one will earn their polar bear badge for camping below freezing tonight!
Last weekend I participated in Jamboree on the Air with my son's Scout troop. We were lucky to have some friends from a local club support our event. A lot of Scouts learned about radio and got on the air.
Verschillende #scouting groepen maken momenteel zelf een grote antenne om berichten naar de maan te sturen. Tijdens hun jaarlijkse 'Jamboree on the Air' ontvangen ze hun zwakke maan-echo's via de Dwingeloo telescoop. Komende nacht kunnen ze alvast testen, wij draaien de telescoop een paar uur naar de maan. #jota https://www.camras.nl/blog/2023/jamboree-on-the-air-2023/
We didn’t do knots last night so this morning’s delivery wasn’t too late…plus long time followers of my #ScoutingNewbie posts will know I’ve taught myself some already.
This book is pretty comprehensive looking,& tells you when you would use them. I’ll still use AnimatedKnots website & videos,I just wanted something more.
As for the other book, some of you will recognise this already.I borrowed an earlier edition from the library & wanted my own copy. Useful for #CheekyCareerChange & #Scouting.
@peeteepee I haven’t come across it. Appreciate the heads-up. 👍
I’d like to go to a Gilwell Reunion sometime, but I fear it’s going to be difficult to fit in given when holidays finish here & where it is. Probably would have to limit number of days attended.
Having said that I looked at this years schedule and it’s mostly on a Saturday and ends earlyish on Sunday, so maybe it won’t be an issue. We’ll see. 🙂
As a new badgeOholic, & pending woggleOholic I can well believe you regarding knots.
@hischeekiness Reunion weekend was a permanent fixture in my diary back in the day. Living in South London it was only a short drive around the M25 for us. I used to go with a number of others from my group, probably 10-12 of us? In those days you just turned up, no need to book and we went Friday morning to Sunday evening. Saturday was the main activity day with a great camp fire in the evening.
If you get the chance to go it's a brilliant experience!
The Cub Leader got the 4 Sixers to read a line or so each of my chosen variation of The Scout Promise, which I repeated back whilst doing the Scout Sign. And then I shook hands with the Cub Leader.
Very special.
And so I’m an Assistant Cub Scout Leader proper now. 😊
(One of the most outgoing Cubs came over to congratulate me. They are going to be quite the Sixer when it’s their turn. 😀 )
@hischeekiness Congratulations and welcome to the Worldwide Brotherhood of Scouts
(Maybe we are not allowed to use that phrase anymore, it was common in my day. If it causes offence, I apologise, but the sentiment remains the same)
@exador23@ai6yr Yeah, this is all on the organizers. The jamboree before this was in Japan and also very hot. But it was so well organized that it was still fun for the kids.
I can only imagine how frightening it is for a teenager to be taken away in an ambulance by people who don't speak their language. Being in hospital is no joke, but then also to worry about how you're going to get home when separated from your scout group. Poor kids!
US Army Garrison Humphreys is like a small city... with the "largest PX" in the world. Those kids aren't going to be experiencing the full World Jamboree experience, but at least they will have A/C! #Scouting#SouthKoreahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckPMr3ESRzo
