Snow - anything even a single flake
Heavy Snow - seeing multiple flakes
KILLER ARCTIC BLAST - all other snow

(To be fair thats probably English not British)

@gimulnautti I don't think “kinos” refers to specifically man-made piles, and the dictionary seems to agree. 🤔

@saruwine Yes, sorry about that. Kinos can be a natural formation as well. But a nietos cannot be man-made.

Fixed it! 👌

@gimulnautti @slothrop And this proves once again that a language evolves under the influence of the geographical area where it is used. In Dutch (Belgium and the Netherlands), we just have one word: “sneeuw”. Al the other appearances of snow are defined by combining “sneeuw” with other nouns… 😎

muoriska,

@VastBee @gimulnautti @slothrop

Sami people seems to have about 150 words to describing snow on its all possible forms, different temperatures.

@gimulnautti
Norwegian:
-snø
-snø
-fonn
-haug (not exclusive to snow)
-kram (adjective)
-?
-skare
-sludd
-kav
-rim

I suppose you have 'sørpe' (sludge) as well?

paxed,

@oysteib @gimulnautti That would be "sohjo" or "loska", I think.

@paxed @oysteib Thanks for adding to the list! I wrote those 10 down off the top of my head while waiting for a friend earlier. 😊

Sohjo can also be water mixed with shavings when you drill a hole in the ice. But in general yeah, mixed water and snow.

There’s also:

Pyry - very thick snowfall with wind, but not with razor-sharp needles

@gimulnautti @oysteib Kohva, riite, polanne - although these are more about ice ...

gimulnautti,
@gimulnautti@mastodon.green avatar

@paxed @oysteib Did we get all the snow yet though? 🤔
