Now is a great time to remind everyone venturing into the #backcountry in #Colorado that until July, it is functionally still winter at altitude. It often freezes at night, and can be very cold and wet for days on end. Carry clothing layers, dry backups, and gear to survive wet nights below freezing. Expect deep, wet snow in the woods, making route finding difficult, and travel frankly exhausting and slow. Weather can go from T-shirts to needing a parka in minutes as storms hit the divide.

"The best conditions for skiing are the best conditions for avalanches." is so true.

I used to be an avid skier in my youth. One of my friends owned a private ski resort near Innsbruck Austria. It was wonderful skiing, but they had to do their own ski patrolling. Being the curious person I am, I learned. We always skied with beacons.

I’ve heard of blue ice before, but never seen it so prominently in person. Notchtop in is always spectactular, but best in a brooding, brewing snowstorm.

I’m not sure this sign is quite blunt enough, tbh.

Any other parents of young kids out there who like to hike / bike / ski / camp?

For us 2023 was the year of learning how to do it with a toddler while keeping him safe, comfortable, and happy.

And it went pretty well, overall. 🙂

In 2024, though, we'll have a new baby, as well...

Any tips, tricks or advice you've got on trip planning & execution with TWO young kids would be welcome!

A toddler carrying a single hiking pole walks down a dirt trail with a large mountain in the background.
A toddler learns up against a tree and looks back at the bridge he just crossed, which spans the blue-green waters of a rushing mountain river.
A cross-country skier towing a toddler in a Thule Chariot convertible stroller with snow-covered mountains partly obscured by clouds in the background.

"On October 30, a hunter on horseback discovered Moore’s body. Standing nearby was a small white dog—it was Finney, and she was alive. When news trickled through the community that Finney had survived 72 days in the backcountry, she became an overnight superstar." —Frederick Dreier for Outside Magazine

Pueblo mountain doesnt see much snow or people, making it a fine place to find solitude, peace and serenity. Resting just 8 miles North of the Nevada border, its Oregons 23rd highest peak reaching 8,639' above sea level. One of those places you feel real connected to the universe being consciously aware of what little resources you have.

We record each and put it on YouTube. Each one is quite different, some I'm less enthusiastic about, but after doing this for a couple of years I must say that on the whole most are really good.

Here's some of my favorites:

  1. in the mountains... How to get a good weather forecast for , what to do in a wildfire, etc.

There's so many others too...

  • Lost Person Behavior with Dr. Robert Koester -- the man who literally wrote the book on the subject
  • How to manage risk in outdoor adventures
  • What to pack and HOW to pack for your backpacking adventure
  • Communication devices
  • and lots more (34 total!)

Well, there you go... the webinar is tonight and I've only had 6 boosts (other than myself, repeatedly) and 1 registrant. I guess my Mastodon followers are much less into adventures.

I'll probably scale back my SAR/AdventureSmart postings accordingly.

I realized recently that I've never seen the Milky Way clearly, in a truly dark night sky. That makes me sad. I will need to correct that someday soon. 🌌 🎇

We’ve had rain, sun, fresh powder and nuking Patagonian winds so far in August. The storm door looks pretty open, vamos a ver what slides through.

Enormous winds hiking to an out of bounds pow zone.

In the western Bernese Oberland!
But spring is on hold with fresh snow, cold and wind! Nice in between; a bit brutal at times… should be better from tomorrow.
