📆 3 March 2023 said the measures needed to address the failure meant that -C would not fly again until later this year.

The -5, 's biggest rocket 🚀, has only two more flights this year before it is withdrawn. And the Ariane-6 follow-on is not yet ready to fly 🥱.

The shortage of rides recently prompted the 🇪🇺 to purchase two American launches.

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@nyrath @DenOfEarth @spaceflight Marketing. It committed Arianespace to the new launch vehicle and provided a sound-bite response to SpaceX undercutting them on price ("Ariane 6 will be cheaper if you wait a couple of years!") while upselling the remaining Ariane 5 LVs in the short term ... which has now bitten them as A6 isn't ready but A5 is discontinued.

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@nyrath @DenOfEarth @spaceflight The joke on Arianespace is that Falcon 9 undermined Ariane 5 on launch price when priced as a disposable one-shot launcher, which is what Ariane 6 was priced to compete with. Reusable Falcon 9 changed the game again. If Starship is successful then just as Arianespace are trying to make a semi-reusable A6 version they'll be as obsolescent as a DC-3 in the age of 747s.

DenOfEarth,
@DenOfEarth@mas.to avatar

@cstross @nyrath @spaceflight
Is it really that dire?
Would Ariane not perhaps be more akin to an Antonov compared to a 747 cargo?

spaceflight,
@spaceflight@techhub.social avatar

@DenOfEarth Check https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/cost-space-launches-low-earth-orbit?time=1982..latest and some of the posts here. They WERE the precisest until SpaceX took over (for a WAY lower price). The problem is they could have reacted since 2014 but decided to continue on government (tax) money the "old" way.

@cstross
There is a difference between Arianespace and SpaceX. Though SpaceX should be commercial like Ariane I am sure that NASA holds their veto right and has all time prio access. Ariane instead has a transparent order list for access. If customers wait too long for a ride with falcon they agree to get earlier access to Ariane. Even on higher price.

@enigma you mean from 📆 2024 ? https://techhub.social/@spaceflight/110396024980997322 (if there aren't more flexible/cheaper until then, or maybe )

    @enigma you mean they may launch more at once for a premium price instead of launching with several ? Or will they compete with , and ? 🤔

    Ah. That explains it.

    MarcinW,

    @DenOfEarth @spaceflight @nyrath rockets are bought in batches. Much of the A5 production facilities don't exist any more, got retooled for Ariane 6.

    MarcinW,

    @spaceflight No, that's unrelated to the A5 purchases.

    spaceflight,
    @spaceflight@techhub.social avatar

    @MarcinW the A6 is late since 2020, so they could have discontinued the A5 later instead of loosing their main contractor to their main competitor ?
