A little off topic, but the markup does great research on privacy and security; if you have or use an RSS reader, I highly recommend subscribing to it.

If i recall correctly, with Mozilla, they showed how many hospital and hospital records websites connected to big tech.

Deleting that godforsaken Facebook account was such a good decision.

atxlvr,

I was suspended in 2014 for trolling an uber post and they wont let me log in to delete it or download all my photos. Im stuck in facebook purgatory.

Crazy how they still create shadow profiles of people whether they have an account or not.

D-ISS-O-CIA-TED,

Your comment made me check - I have one from 6 years ago. Deleted. Thanks for that!

It's fkkin crazy just how hard they tried to hide the delete button under the 5th nested settings page and then had me confirm multiple times. And they sent me an email informing me that I can reactivate my account at any time in the next month - it won't be deleted until a month from now! Gives me the creeps. Fuck Facebook

ImJustaBagofHammers,

Imagine a future where you get targeted ads for suicide. Bleak indeed.

PistolsAtDawn,

Nah, selling the data to insurance companies is far more lucrative.

Iwamoto,

So just...Canada, at the moment. I just read my own comment back and I'd like to wake up at some point.

doesn't even have to be an ad. just an algorithmic push in a direction you wouldn't have otherwise gone in. we all see how the alt-right pipeline works on these algo-feeds. i have an unpopular personal belief that suicide is a human right (bodily autonomy and all) but i definitely don't think its ethical to all an algorithm to manipulate someone in that direction.

Our tax office is using google scripts. Why? Because it's free and easy and we use these tools all the time.

All the COVID registration systems, appointment systems, there was a bit of google everywhere. Because it's free and our sysadmins are used to those scripts.

I'm glad that the AI is making our governments think twice about who is hosting the data and what they could be doing with it. Maybe a collateral effect of the AI frenzy is that our governments and our administrations will end up less naive.

“Advertisers should not send sensitive information about people through our Business Tools,” Meta spokesperson Emil Vazquez told The Markup in an emailed statement that mirrored those the company has previously provided in response to reporting on the Meta Pixel. “Doing so is against our policies and we educate advertisers on properly setting up Business tools to prevent this from occurring. Our system is designed to filter out potentially sensitive data it is able to detect."

Yeah, sure...

Vazquez did not respond to a question about whether or how Meta could determine if this specific data was filtered.

I wonder why

@CynAq

@developerjustin
Be kind to Meta they probably had to wait for their PR writer ChatGPT to come up with a good response.

Iwamoto,

This is the most "well, they won't do it because, well, they shouldn't" answer I've read in a while.

"So y'all purged that sensitive data because you shouldn't have received it in the manner that you did?"

"Welllll....you see what had happened was..."
