Atheism

@atheism@kbin.social

A place to discuss everything related to atheism. Ideas, debates, news. We privilege high standards and politeness for our content.

Click here to support the development of Kbin

Rules

Rule 1: No insults, no bigotry, no racism, no sexism. Discuss ideas, not people.

Rule 2: This place is for discussions about atheism, not ranting about the situation. Does your message induce a discussion? If not then you probably want to post it to your blog.

Rule 3: You will make your point better if you add a source to your message, so other people know about the context and have a better understanding of what you are talking about.

Rule 4: Tone is important, do you believe that your message can be misunderstood? If so then think again and rewrite your message in a different way.

Rule 5: Politics is not strictly forbidden, but keep in mind that there are elections everyday, in every country around the world. Is your message about atheism with a flavour of politics, or about politics with a flavour of atheism? Stay focused on our topic.

Rule 6: As a general rule: can you show your message to your mom and still be proud of what you wrote? If so then you can probably send it. If not then relax, rewrite it and send it later (or forget about it).

Rule 7: We know that our ideas do not please everyone around us, so don't give ammo to your opponents by posting lazy content or being purposefully antagonistic. Be your best self so no atheist would be ashamed of our front page.

Rule 8: No repost of Facebook memes, Twitter rages or TikTok nonsense. If we wanted Facebook content then we would be browsing Facebook now.

CalvinAndHobbes Icon

Calvin and Hobbes

@CalvinAndHobbes@kbin.social

Quoting wikipedia, "Calvin and Hobbes is a daily American comic strip created by cartoonist Bill Watterson that was syndicated from November 18, 1985 to December 31, 1995. Commonly cited as "the last great newspaper comic", Calvin and Hobbes has enjoyed broad and enduring popularity, influence, academic and philosophical interest”.

This magazine celebrates this superb comic strip which is filled with imagination and humor.

Official site: https://www.calvinandhobbes.com/about-calvin-and-hobbes/

DAILY POSTING INFO:
The daily strips I post (I being the mod SpacemanSpiff), are posted on the (approximate) date they appeared 20 years ago (2023 = originally published in 1993). The date isn’t precise because the days of the week aren’t the same, so in order to post the Sunday strips on Sunday I need to adjust either forward or backward a few days depending on the year.

STORY ARCS:
If the currently running daily’s don’t have a story arc going, I like to supplement my daily posting with an arc chosen from anywhere in the strip’s entire library. I usually try to make the title fun as if you’re following a serial installment in an actual magazine.

I’m always open to suggestions for improvement. Welcome! And I hope you enjoy! :)

Rules

  1. Don't post pictures of books.
Unless you want to post pictures of unique books (e.g. autographed ones), please refrain from posting pictures of the usual books.

  2. No merchandise selling or advertising.
Please don't try to make money with C&H merchandise or help others to do so. Bill Watterson battled against pressure from publishers to merchandise his work. He felt that would cheapen his comic. We respect that.

  3. No NSFW
This is a community for a comic strip. Although most readers are adult, we want this community to be safe for children. So, no NSFW posts and try to reduce swearing in comments as far as possible.

  4. Use a descriptive title.
"This is funny" or "My birthday comic" is too generic. Simply stating something about the strip you shared, or repeating phrasing from the strip is enough!

  5. No posts that are not in sprit of Calvin and Hobbes Comics or would be appreciable by Bill Watterson. This means fan art in the spirit of is ok, Calvin pissing on things is not.

  6. Single panels should be meaningful by itself. Single panels are allowed as far as they are meaningful by itself and are a whole panel. Of course single panel strips can be modified ones too which in turn would be subjected to the above mentioned rules.

linuxquestions Icon

Linux Questions

@linuxquestions@kbin.social

A place to ask Linux-related questions, post advice and suggestions, etc.

Any questions pertaining to Linux from novice to greybeard level are welcome.

Asking Questions:

Please provide enough info to for people to actually help you. While there are some things that are generally the same, there is no one "Linux" - every distro has some things they do different and you'll get better answers if you provide some info.

And remember the people here are helping you purely out of their own good will - so be nice!

If you are encountering a problem, please include:

  1. Which distro you are using
  2. A brief summary of the problem
  3. Any steps you have attempted
  4. Relevant details such as hardware specs (see below), application versions, etc.

Capturing System Specs

In almost all cases, posting output from

inxi -Fmz
  • either as in a code block, as a linked file, or as a screenshot - will be appreciated. Some distros may pre-install inxi but on others (such as Fedora), you may need to install it yourself. But we understand that there will be times when you are unable to provide this info (such as with boot problems).

The output from inxi info should be safe (especially with the -z option)... But in general,YOU SHOULD ALWAYS REVIEW OUTPUT AND REMOVE ANY PRIVATE DATA BEFORE POSTING ONLINE (e.g. replace "Your Name" with <redacted> or something similar - this helps in preventing doxxing, identity theft, and similar issues).

  • Some common graphical screenshot apps:gnome-screenshot, ksnip, shutter, and flameshot . There are also terminal-based ones like maim and scrot.
  • There are plenty of free, text-pasting sites (e.g. pastebin.com) out there that are arguably better than pastebin itself. Any of these should work. We recommend any of the instances of the opensource PrivateBin. But you can find more options listed here.
  • To copy text from a terminal app, first open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T), then run the command, then to select text hold down the left-mouse and drag to select. Once selected, release left mouse and either press Ctrl+Shift+C or right-click on the selected text and choose "Copy" to copy text to clipboard.
  • You can also format the text as a codeblock. To do so, select the text in your post and clicking the icon that looks like a </> symbol. For larger outputs (more than 2-3 lines), it is recommended to add a blank line above and below the output to help with formatting.

Recommended Beginner Distros:

Please keep in mind that this is not to say other distros are necessarily "bad" for beginners. Linux is not Windows or Mac, so there will be things to adjust to. This list of the distros is what we think users trying Linux for the first time (and presumably having little or no experience with it) will have the easiest times adjust to. It is still recommended to try them and to watch videos on youtube etc.

Other kbin communities you may enjoy:

Rules

Rules

Please try to be decent with each other.

This is not the place for debating which distro/app/text-editor/etc is superior, nor is it the right place for showing off memes/jokes/news/tweaked desktops/wearables/stickers or so on. If that's what you are looking for, see above for places where you can post those things.

Spamming sites and/or asking for payment are categorically not welcome here.

When asking for help:

  • Please remember there is no paid staff here - the people helping are everyday people just like you that are taking time out of their day to try and help. We all know that running into problems can be frustrating but do your best not to rant too much or take it out on others.
  • Try to provide enough info for people to help (see above) without going overboard and drowning in detail.
  • You are welcome to post your question elsewhere as well (in fact, it is encouraged).
  • Please remember to update your post as SOLVED whether you get help here or somewhere else - kbin, unlike reddit, allows you to edit your post titles.
  • If you find a solution to your problem that isn't mentioned here, please consider documenting the steps here as well - that might potentially help someone else facing the same issue!

When leaving responses:

  • Please avoid "RTFM" style comments. Yes, we know it was sort of an in-joke back in the days, but aside from not really being helpful, many newbies won't understand that it's often a joke. Likewise, simply leaving a link to a top-level document can be confusing. Especially if the documentation has many sections or the site later goes down. Instead, please consider an answer that address the immediate ask as best as you can, along with a link to the relevant section of the documentation (if possible) for more information.
  • We all have our own software/distro/etc preferences but please make every effort to avoid putting down what you may see as bad choices. If you don't like snaps or something else it's fine to say as much, just please no ranks or insulting the askers for using a given distro/app/whatever.
RoughRomanMemes Icon

True Roman Memes For True Romans

@RoughRomanMemes@kbin.social

A place to meme about the glorious ROMAN EMPIRE (and Roman Republic, and Roman Kingdom)!

Rules

I. Posts must be memes about Ancient Rome. Titles are not taken into consideration, the meme itself must be about Ancient Rome.

II. No recent reposts.

III. Crop excessive blank space off of your images.

IV. The post itself must be a meme. Titles are not taken into consideration.

V. AI generated images and text are not a meme. You can use an AI image as an ingredient in a meme, but "I gave AI a Roman prompt" is not a meme on its own. AI text alone is not a meme, if the post is mostly AI text it's probably not a meme even if you added some visuals.

VI. If it's the birthday of a Roman figure, you have to make an actual MEME to post their happy Bday.

VII. Hate and bigotry in posts or comments will result in a ban.

VIII. Be respectful in the forum (comments)

IX. Please listen to the mod team

      • The following content is strictly prohibited:
        • Advertisements
        • Conspiracy theories
        • Personal blog posts
        • Satire
        • Debunked/fabricated content
    • The quality of content will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and is at the moderators' discretion.
  • 2.5 - Non-English articles

    • Non-English articles may be posted, but only if accompanied by a comment containing the article’s English translation.
    • Translation must be conducted by using either DeepL or Google Translate.
    • Do not use your own translation unless it is being used to rectify errors in the software’s translation.
      • Localisation corrections (such as a figure of speech) should be provided in square brackets beside the original.

3. Spamming and agendaposting applies to both comments and posts:

  • 3.1 - Spamming

    • A user may only submit five posts per 24 hours. Any submissions that exceed this 5-post limit will automatically be removed.
    • Users may not engage in disruptive behavior or no-value-added spamming, including brigading.
  • 3.2 - Agendaposting

    • Agendaposting is the process of only, or mostly submitting posts that conform to a certain agenda or political stance. This is strictly prohibited.
    • If more than 67% of recent posts are considered to be exclusively pushing the same agenda, then action will be taken.
    • Users are prohibited from accusing other users of agendaposting in the comments. Complaints on particular suspected agendaposters are only allowed via the report system or via modmailing with substantial evidence to demonstrate a said user is an agendaposter.
    • Agendaposting is reviewed on a case-by-case basis at the moderators' discretion.

4: Keep it civil

  • To encourage healthy debates, the following behaviors are prohibited

    • Personal attacks
    • Name-calling
    • Harassment of any kind
    • Discrimination, including Age, disability, ethnicity, gender, origin, religion, or sexual orientation
    • Attacks will be reviewed case-by-case basis at the moderators' discretion.
    • Retaliation, in the same manner, is also forbidden - perpetrators should instead be reported.
    • Whataboutism and similar off-topic deviation are prohibited in top-level comments and replies and as the primary focus of a comment to keep discussions on the topic with respect to the post's contents. Whataboutism will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis at the moderators' discretion.
    • Linking to Comments and Posts unrelated to the current topic and to users not involved in the current conversation (excluding mods or exceptionally informative comments shared in good faith) is not allowed. Any unrelated link will be removed, and any user suspected of sharing links in an attempt to harass or encourage harassment will be permanently banned from participation.

@newcommunities@lemmy.world

A place to post new communities all over Lemmy for discovery and promotion.

Rules

The rules may be more established as time goes on, but it’s important to have a foundation to work on.

1. Follow the rules of Lemmy.world - These rules are the same as Mastodon.world’s rules, which can be found here.

2. Include a community title and description in your post title. - A following example of this would be New Communities - A place to post new communities all over Lemmy for discovery and promotion.

3. Follow the formatting. - The formatting as included below is important for people getting universal links across Lemmy as easily as possible.

Formatting

Please include this following format in your post:

[link text](/c/community@instance.com)

This provides a link that should work across instances, but in some cases it won’t

You should also include either:

!community

or instance.com/c/community

FAQ:

Q: Why do I get a 404?

A: At least one user in an instance needs to search for a community before it gets fetched. Searching for the community will bring it into the instance and it will fetch a few of the most recent posts without comments. If a user is subscribed to a community, then all of the future posts and interactions are now in-sync.

Q: When I try to create a post, the circle just spins forever. Why is that?

A: This is a current known issue with large communities. Sometimes it does get posted, but just continues spinning, but sometimes it doesn’t get posted and continues spinning. If it doesn’t actually get posted, the best thing to do is try later. However, only some people seem to be having this problem at the moment.

Hello there. Somehow, Star Wars memes have returned. It’s not a trap, this is where the fun begins.

Technical note: if you’re coming from another star system and are getting a “Subscription pending” message when trying to dock, that’s just the console being slow to display the right message. The connection is already established. (Probably.)

IMPORTANT

Do not post the “good friend” or similar copypasta

Special days!

Friday and weekends: Caption contest. An image will be pinned, and we shall make captions for it and post them in the comments.

Wednesday: Theme day. We have Droids day, EU day, poem day, aliens day… Let the pinned post guide you. Memes with the theme are preferred.

Our galactic citizens have requested more specific rules, so here are a few.

The general idea is, if you’re looking here for rules, you’re probably someone who doesn’t need to have them spelled out. You’re fine. But anyway:

  1. This is a community for Star Wars memes. This means typically screenshots of Star Wars media with some text or context that’s meant to be funny and/or thoughtful. All SW media is welcome: movies, games, comic books, fanart… Other kinds of content, like video links or meta memes (about this community, or Lemmy), are fine as well, just keep it on topic.
  2. We are all friends here, and love (sometimes love to hate) Star Wars. Be nice to each other.
  3. As fans of fictional media, we can be passionate. If you very strongly disagree with something or someone, take a deep breath before reacting. Anger leads to the dark side!
  4. Everything in Star Wars has happened a long time ago, in a galaxy far away, and it’s a rich universe of millions of words and millions of years of history. So current Earthly matters really shouldn’t concern us here. In other words, leave politics, philosophies and convictions behind the door. This applies even if it’s about something related to Star Wars.
  5. Original content is preferred. Reposts are fine, just please limit to a maximum of 3 per day, per citizen. It is recommended, but not required, to mark original memes as (OC) and reposts as (repost).
  6. Local mods are the Jedi council. They may take actions that are necessary to maintain peace and stability of the Republic, even beyond the rules outlined here. Follow their guidance.
  7. Regular rules of the Lemmy.world instance apply.

  • Debate in good faith - if you're unwilling to have your mind changed, don't come in here trying to change ours

  • Low tolerance for fallacious arguments and Tired Crypto Talking Points
