@Archaeology@kbin.social

This magazine is dedicated to discussions on the latest news, stories, and developments in archaeology.

Whether you are an archaeologist yourself, or simply interested in the subject and the human past, this is the place for you.

Here you can share your knowledge, ask questions, and engage in discussions on archaeological topics, as well as topics of the historical record, and more.

While we try to keep the focus on stories and discussions with scientific basis, thought experiments are welcome. If there is something you’re interested in and this seems the place to discuss it, or if you’re simply not sure of the distinction, don’t shy away!

Join the conversation and let's explore the world of archaeology together!

Rules

RULES:

  1. Be respectful.

  2. When possible, link sources referenced in discussion.

  3. While non-mainstream articles may be explored, any with strong pseudoscience and/or pseudo-archaeology leanings will be regulated and/or tagged as such.

Machine Learning

@machinelearning@kbin.social

Machine learning (ML) is a field devoted to understanding and building methods that let machines "learn" – that is, methods that leverage data to improve computer performance on some set of tasks.

Machine learning algorithms build a model based on sample data, known as training data, in order to make predictions or decisions without being explicitly programmed to do so. Machine learning algorithms are used in a wide variety of applications, such as in medicine, email filtering, speech recognition, agriculture, and computer vision, where it is difficult or unfeasible to develop conventional algorithms to perform the needed tasks.

Rules

Rules:

  • Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:

    • Post news articles only
    • Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
    • Title must match the article headline
    • Not United States Internal News
    • Recent (Past 30 Days)
    • Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
  • Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think “Is this fair use?”, it probably isn’t. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.

  • Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.

  • Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.

  • Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19

  • Rule 5: Keep it civil. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect!

  • Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.

  • Rule 7: We didn’t USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you’re posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

Rules

RULES

Note - These rules were copied from part of the rules in a subreddit as a baseline and may change (slightly) in the near future.

I. Conduct

Be civil – Don’t be a prick; this is a place to have a friendly discussion, light-hearted smack-talking, and in-depth/thorough dialogue with fellow NFL fans. We won’t be excessively vindictive about this, but if you play the role of instigator, we may take action if we feel it’s necessary – from removing your thread or post to a temporary ban or permanent ban if your conduct is especially deplorable. It isn’t hard to be cognizant of what you’re typing. And do remember that tone isn’t always implicit in what is being typed, so just make an effort to be courteous. If it’s something that might offend in person with a stranger, exercise some degree of caution, it can often prevent a miscommunication.

Internet Behavior – This is a step above basic civility that we expect from ALL users here, explicated in the above section. DO NOT troll, flamebait, or otherwise issue insulting invectives at other users that are meant to ruffle feathers and cause tempers to flare. We have a very low tolerance for this.

II. Posting/Submissions

Impertinent Posts - It goes without saying, really. Anything that is not tangentially related to the NFL is subject to removal. Politics, religion, and other contentious topics aren’t necessary here. Sports can get people riled up enough as it is, we don’t need to exacerbate that tendency as it is. If you have to pause and question yourself whether something really belongs here, it likely doesn’t.
