in this case: no, they’re just Filipino, and it seems to just be a contraction of Jupiter or something similarly banal. i think it would be prudent in the future to do a bit of double checking before we start accusing people of Nazis; you can easily check your assumption by just visiting their mastodon page, linked in the description of their kbin account.
I think the last really big hurdle to an actually democratized internet is that we need to make it easier to host at home.
Asymmetrical download upload is such a fucking pain. I would rather have 100 down and 100 up then 400 down and 5 up like I currently do.
On top of that, there aren't a lot of good systems in place to enable me to host a website from home. If IPv6 were common it would be easy for me to secure a static IP address and to point that to my DNS resolver and attach my domain, but since I've got to be on an ipv4 system since no provider in my area provides an on-ramp to IPv6 and even if they did the Grand majority of Internet users cannot resolve IPv6 addresses, it's dead in the water.
If every person in America had symmetrical upload download and a static IPv6 address for their home, we could get rid of the grand majority of the content provider and hosts and instead use democratized systems like bluesky and Kbin and Mastodon and free tube without having to worry about these multi trillion dollar companies' bottom lines.
New here. Migrated from Reddit. Still trying to figure out Lemmy - what’s everyone’s experiences like coming from Reddit and does Lemmy serve as a good alternative? Pros and cons/differences?...
Welcome. Its been great for me so far. Whatever instance you are currently on the amount of politics and echo chamber does matter. So feel free to comment and enjoy. If you have a complaint try another instance (or even Kbin) to see if this helps. Also to note that there is much more control about what communities and people you can interact with
In strict technical terms, yeah it’s okay, albeit with the shortcomings to be expected of a smaller development team. In terms of population and activity with this format, I think it may be at the top compared to alternatives as well.
There’s still others and other software options though for this format that people could try, which honestly may even be technically better, but lacking population/activity means they’re in an odd spot.
The first of these you’ll read about on here are likely Kbin/Mbin, possibly followed by PieFed or still-in-development Sublinks. Kbin/Mbin is definitely the runner-up in terms of federated Reddit-alternatives, as it was one of the few options available at the time people were leaving Reddit.
PieFed and Sublinks have emerged more recently with different priorities and approaches compared to Lemmy, but with the same desire to offer a federated option for people to deploy.
The last you may read about around here would be of stuff like Discuit, Lobste.rs, Raddle (and any other sites built with Postmill), Tildes, and the like, which are all most like Reddit in terms of their being stand-alone sites, unconnected to any others running the same underlying server software. However each of these, I think, may have lower population than the cumulative population of the Lemmy network of sites.
All that said, cutting to your last question: ultimately it heavily depends on the instance/site you settle into.
Lemmy isn’t a monolith, which is both its greatest strength and weakness compared to Reddit. You may be able to find a Lemmy instance/site that heavily blocks out politics and moderates lightly, but the irony of this is that it means it may have to be overly-policed to achieve that, and might appear less active in the process from heavy disconnection/defederation from any instances/sites that permit political posts/discussion.
Right now though, much of Lemmy is heavily political, and it’s arguably because of lax moderation to keep political posts/discussions to relevant communities, which is itself probably in part because of lacking moderation tools to enable lighter touches to redirect posts/discussions.
Nevertheless, it’s possibly the best option fitting the format available at the moment given the rest, but if Lemmy and federation doesn’t suit you you might check out Tildes or Discuit. Although be advised: Tildes remains invite only for now.
Honestly I think any general/casual discussion community would welcome posts about those subjects as well, which there are a number of across Lemmy sites to check out.
Not going to downvote you, partly because I only downvote spam and partly because kbin doesn't federate downvotes so I can't even see downvotes from you and vice versa.
But I fundamentally disagree. One of the lessons of Nuremberg was that obeying orders isn't a good enough reason to commit war crimes.
One of the corollaries to that, for me, is that obeying rules isn't a good enough reason to be complicit in covering up war crimes either.
If a secret is a crime it's more treasonous to keep it a secret, because the people of our nations haven't voted to leave the Geneva Conventions and go out and commit war crimes.
Kbin is an example. But just due to the nature of the protocol, it has to be stored somewhere but Lemmy also just lets admins view all the individual votes directly in the UI.
Kbin users seeing who downvotes their posts is potentially an issue, but I don’t want to discourage downvoting bad or harmful content for just that reason. The end goal is that bad content gets removed and offending users acted on. So if a Kbin user is abusing the system to harrass or abuse, they should likewise reported and banned.
As a little background, I didn’t actively use Reddit for months following the blackout. I still barely stop in over there and if I do I’m never logged in our contributing to the communities there (where I was previously a daily poster/commenter)....
There's a really cool one I used to love called The 13th Floor that used to be active and then one week the mod and his friends disappeared.
After the mod was gone for a month I took over moderation to protect it from spam or deletion, but I have other projects so can't really do it justice. I would love it if it got a new lease on life.
I have an account on Kbin and no, you don’t usually see downvotes. But I don’t see that as a bad thing actually. Your comments in this thread didn’t get any downvote, by the way.
Probably because it is, and then add in federation issues (at least that's been my experience with Kbin). That and if I post about something niche people may have no reason to actually respond.
Hi! Recently exiled reddit user, here. I’m curious what other alternatives to reddit there are, besides Lemmy, and Raddle, of course. Also, imho, Phuks is a good alternative, there’s no hate-speech (that I’m aware of) and people are pretty respectful. Anyways, let’s hear your suggestions! Thank you!
Hard to recommend one over the other, especially as I’m not following things closely. mbin is a fork and seems well maintained at the moment while the lead dev and founder of kbin seems to be struggling to keep working on kbin. Things could change though.
I haven't been paying close attention but it seems to be doing well. I originally joined the Fediverse on kbin.social because I liked the idea of supporting an alternative to a Lemmy monoculture, especially given what I'd seen of Lemmy's devs' views, but over time it became apparent that the lone developer of kbin wasn't intending to take advantage of outside assistance and that it wasn't going to work out as a single-person project in the long run. So I'm glad mBin forked, it seems to have picked up the necessary momentum. The mBin instance I'm on has had the occasional downtime or bug but nowhere near the kind of trouble kBin routinely had.
Hello everyone, check out my announcement post linked above and if you don’t know who I am, check out my past post to learn more about me and It would mean a lot of you show your support for my future iniatives inside the fediverse!...
So several smaller lemmy instances (like sopuli, ani.social, reddthat, etc) are having some serious slowdown issues right now and are having delayed federation with lemmy.world. From what I understand, the suspected cause is a kbin bug, where it’s glitching out and spamming the fediverse with infinitely repeating federation updates. Several lemmy instances have blocked kbin over it (including lemmy.world and sopuli), but it’s still causing issues and slowdowns.
There have been multiple attempts to reach the admin for kbin about it, but his developer accounts seemingly went dark 4 months ago (according to his commit history) and he’s not responding to any messages. Mbin has seemingly already patched it according to their resolved issues/pull requests, but it’s looking like kbin may have to be cut off from the rest if the fediverse unless the dev resurfaces.
Lemmy: Flawed but fun; doesn’t do enough about fascists on the platform but at least they’re really good about free speech.
Kbin: Boring. They don’t have downvotes and it’s just a stream of information with little context. Its users kind of suck.
Beehaw: Fascist, in a liberal way. They moderate like totalitarians and are so uber sensitive to any prospective outside their own.
Mastodon: Misses the mark. They tried to replace twitter and succeeded; not learning from any of its mistakes. As a result it’s all of the liberalism of twitter and none of the communists. Also little known fact is that Truth Social is a fork of mastodon, so good job on that one 👍
Beehaw is still Lemmy (unless anything has changed recently), but the instance is run a particular way. There should be a link somewhere about their philosophy and what the differences are.
In terms of vibe / community, I would think that there are more differences between the individual instances than the software that they run. That’s something which is easier to get an idea of as you use it more.
When I was starting out, Kbin didn’t have as much third party support, so there wasn’t a good way to use it on mobile. That may have changed since then
kbin (at least kbin.social) has a nice little community, but we're holding on by a thread over there since we've been overrun with spammers and nothing is really being done to combat it. A good chunk of people have jumped ship because of it, but we're still trying to fight where we can.
I made an mbin alt, but I haven't really hung out enough here to get a proper feel of it. Honestly it feels like looking through a window to the rest of the fediverse. If there's any chill mbin (edit) instances magazines, I'd love to know!
Beehaw seems to have the most positive vibes, and I really like that. It seems small, but they're pretty active. I mainly enjoy their gaming community.
I think I interact the most with Lemmy, but that's probably because that's where most active instances are. You'll get a lot more different takes on there than anywhere else, some great, some not so great, but that comes with any site where you bring a bunch of people together.
Of course, these are from my experience and opinion. I'm interested to see others' takes.
One of the weirdest things about having a kbin account is we can see low effort trolling comments like this even after the mods removed it and the rest of the people in here can't see it.
3 or 4 spam "Buy Phloboxidril Now In Your Area" posts per day were tolerable. 20 to 50 aren't. I know I could block the magazine, but I'm just one of the many who are subjected to it....
I think I'm going to give up on Kbin. Every time in enter it's full of spam, so is not worth posting anything since is going to be buried in spam anyways
Even as someone that's still active here, this would never happen. Neither lemmy or Kbin were ready to replace reddit in either features, stability or support, not then and not even today. It's unfortunate but reddit is not going to go down when there is no actual competition available.
I don’t know if others are experiencing a similar situation. My all feed is very sparse with engagement. If I sort top six hours or by top 12 most posts have between 5-10 comments. I feel like there was more in the past? Is engagement dropping off? I’m on lemmy.world as my instance.
My comments seem like they're getting more votes/replies than usual. That could just be because of better stability though, also coincidental/context?
Though I posted 2 threads (OC, simple 3D models with vertex colors. banan) 2 weeks ago that didn't do much (and they both had federation issues in different places, one went to lemmy.world and not other places and the other thread did the opposite) in Kbin communities that don't have any new activity still. I thought about posting to artshare (on LW) to see if that'd be better but I also haven't done anything new with it recently.
How does one go about applying to be a mod for a mod-less community?
