Y’all: I have been wrestling with kbin on the fedia.io instance, but I want to take a step back and give some perspective. Kbin is new, it’s growing crazy fast, and it really wasn’t in a place to support the migration from Reddit. Despite that, @ernest has been working his tail off knocking down issues and helpings instance admins.
Reddit certainly seems to be tripling down on their position and I think kbin is shaping up to be a worthy alternative. If you like kbin (on whatever instance you use it on) and want to see it grow, may I ask that you throw some money Ernest’s way? (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/kbin)
I want to publicly thank Ernest for kbin and for his contributions to our growing fediverse community.
@jerry@mastodonmigration@ernest Isn't #kbin written in Javascript? I doubt that will be able to scale to anywhere needed for large adoption.. But then again, what do I know, Facebook is written in PHP 🤷
/m/politics is basically unmoderated, and the trolls and other ne'er-do-wells are starting to find it. I'm not even particularly interested in following it, but that's one topic that you don't want to leave unmoderated. It's a troll magnet for obvious reasons, and that starts to affect the rest of the instance (and the...
This goes out to all the homies that don't have the time/energy to moderate, and to the ones that do that would like ideas (If there's been posts about this already then I'm srry)
@thx1138 When I saw there wasn't one for my state on Kbin or Lemmy, I made /m/Utah. So maybe you can be the change in the world and make your state one. 😁
Since Lemmy and Kbin are federating now, maybe you’ll find something in line with what you’re looking for, like maybe https://lemmy.world/c/motorcycles would work for you. :)
I'm still learning this myself. So only speaking from limited experience.
But from what I understand, in the case of Lemmy, KBin, Mastodon, and a few others, they all use the ActivityPub network protocol and that is what essentially connects them all together.
I am only speculating, but I expect that there is some improvements needed in that protocol along with some standardization between dissimilar platforms to facilitate better visibility between those dissimilar platforms.
On the flip side, even Lemmy to Lemmy instances have issues showing communities from other lemmy instances. Which, leads me to suspect a problem either in configuration of the instances, or in the underlying protocol (ActivityPub).
Edit: from the kbinmeta magazine, here's more details on plans for the search feature here.
Four right now. I have a kbin that I'm keeping contained to kbin for the time being. I have one on Beehaw that was going to be my main on Lemmy, but I made another on .world to interact everywhere since Beehaw defederated for now. And one for NSFW-only.
Two right now, this one and one on Bookwyrm I made way back. Going to be interesting to see how multiple accounts are juggled. From a user perspective it’s a little weird to view multiple types of content from one account (ie lemmy, Mastodon, kbin content from this account) but if I want to say post on pixelfed I’d need a pixelfed instance account. Maybe an app with multi-account management will come around that makes that a little easier. Or maybe eventually a mega-instance that is interoperable with every fedi-service? At that point is it just centralized again? Oof
Two, one on beehaw which was my first one, and one on kbin cause it's cool.
Edit: if you are thinking of joining kbin give fediverse.boo and readit.buzz a try. Two stable kbin instances
There's a lot of noise with this one. Among the noisiest we've seen. Please know that our teams are on it, and like all blowups on Reddit, this one will pass as well. The most important things we can do right now are stay focused, adapt to challenges, and keep moving forward. We absolutely must ship what we said we would....
Personally, KBIN, although it's only running beta and needs some refinement.
With any luck, I will have a Boston-based KBIN instance up this weekend (https://feddit.online). I did get a test server working on Saturday, but the Sunday update seems to have broken the build. So, I'll get back to it on Saturday and hope I can get it working. I was so looking forward to announcing it last weekend ☹️
Anyway, it's either KBIN or Lemmy at this point.
But, the Lemmy Devs appear to have a record of questionable behavior and given that the Fediverse strongly leans left, there's always a chance that someday Lemmy instances may be blocked or shunned. It may not be the best place for someone to make a home.
Like many others, I've been using Lemmy since the reddit blackout started. A few things I think would help onboard folks more easily or contribute to long term success of the platform(s) are:...
That's a good point...point still stands that there needs to be a universal way to do this. Maybe even a web extension. Maybe a future kbin mobile app can be coded to convert /c/ to /m/, and vice versa
Mastodon has the idea of 'Groups' (which are Kbin Magazines and Lemmy Communities), but it seems to not have methods of creating one. While you can subscribe to hashtags in Mastodon, I don't think they are equivalent.
Groups/Communities seem to be a non-native concept for Mastodon, but it seem to treat it as a person (from the short time I subscribed to a lemmy group/community from mastodon, it seems you get an update for every comment or reply made to any topic)
The idea of following a person (or subscribing to them) seems to be a non-native concept in Lemmy and there doesn't seem to be any way to support it.
The kbin pop_os magazine seems to also be modded by an official mod/employee of system76. I guess they were still testing the waters and for now it seems they decided on lemmy.world. Interestingly there's also kbin.social/m/System76 with no lemmy.world alternative.
Like you said, things will probably be messy for a bit as everyone settles.
I'm trying to create a magazine, but along with slow activity, it's randomly being listed as "related to" a completely NSFW magazine, is there any way to prevent that?
It is nice to see you too! This Federated concept is so cool - apparently we can all share, from Mastodon or squabbles or directly from kbin, whatever we like. It's a breath of fresh air compared to what we are used to. I look forward to great things.
Unfortunately it looks like more things are broken than work, but somehow I get the feeling it may still be more fun than Reddit regardless? :-P Especially with my favorite people starting to migrate here:-D.
I don't know why, but some magazines are not federation (like the PS5@lemmy.ml). And if you try to use the link from kbin to check the community, I get a community not found, but, if I use Firefox to go to the link it works nicely
No, it's not that. The kbin site itself loads, and says the magazine doesn't exist. Also they've upgraded servers and aren't running cloud flair's protection anymore
Does anyone know how you go about making a new post in a magazine here on kbin? (Sorry for the dumb noob question, mods, please move / delete this if this isn't the right place for this!)
Most people access the Fediverse through one of the large instances: lemmy.world, kbin, or beehaw. New or small instances of Lemmy have no content by default, and can most easily get content by linking to larger Lemmy instances. This is done manually one "Community" at a time (I spent 15 minutes doing this yesterday). Meanwhile,...
I'd say for the majority of people who are coming here from Reddit, the concept of federated servers and looking for duplicates would be a pain. I think most people who come to a site like kbin search to see if there's a local community and if not would want to create it.
Admins I'd assume would be able to search connected other sites to see if a community exists elsewhere, but that sounds like it puts more work on them when they're busy with PRs and infrastructure work.
I've got no idea about what the best approach is, but it needs to be somewhat simple it we want people to join and stick around I feel.
/m/politics has no moderators other than ernest

What are some communities you'd like to see on Lemmy that don't exist yet?

Are there any communities you've not yet seen on kbin that you used to visit on Reddit?...

How many accounts do you have on lemmy/kbin?
First time posting, but i was wondering if i was the only one who had more than 2 accounts in total on here
Curious, if you were/are a Reddit user, will you be leaving the platform for good or have you already? CEO has called unpaid moderators' concerns "noise", that will be "passing soon."

What do you think are the biggest upgrades (infra or usability) that could be made to the fediverse?

What is your guys' experience with Lemmy and Kbin interaction
This post comes from Lemmy, so at least we know that part works lmao....
[META] A lot (or all) of the kbin links here aren't working
Just a heads up. Idk if it's a server thing or people are formatting wrong
Silly kbin question - how to show content from my subscriptions?
Like I go to kbin home and it seems to show everything, i'm probably just missing some little button.
The Lemmy User Experience is Better When Centralized into Fewer Instances
