jerry,

Y’all: I have been wrestling with kbin on the fedia.io instance, but I want to take a step back and give some perspective. Kbin is new, it’s growing crazy fast, and it really wasn’t in a place to support the migration from Reddit. Despite that, @ernest has been working his tail off knocking down issues and helpings instance admins.

Reddit certainly seems to be tripling down on their position and I think kbin is shaping up to be a worthy alternative. If you like kbin (on whatever instance you use it on) and want to see it grow, may I ask that you throw some money Ernest’s way? (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/kbin)

I want to publicly thank Ernest for kbin and for his contributions to our growing fediverse community.

/back to whatever you were doing.

@jerry Thank you, Jerry, that's very kind of you. Sometimes I lack words to express how much kindness I encounter here, and I know I often repeat it, but you are wonderful guys. Truly.

We have challenging times ahead. We need to cover critical functions in the code, develop better moderation tools, focus on performance, and create user-friendly documentation. By doing so, it will be much easier. And I intentionally use the word "we" because what is happening on Codeberg is absolute madness.

It definitely won't be easy for me either because I take this project very personally, but I need to delegate tasks and share the responsibility. Only in this way can we seize the opportunity that has unexpectedly appeared. An opportunity to build something special here.

Now I'm going back to bed. A series of emails woke me up, and I thought something critical was happening on the instance. It's nice to be pleasantly surprised :)

jdp23,

@ernest very impressed by everything you've been doing -- it's a great opportunity! @jerry

jdp23,

Also @ernest , you may well already be doing this, but if not: getting a moderation team in place ASAP will help offload you from something that could quickly become very time-consuming (and also a huge energy drain). This is something that mastodon.social waited too long to do. If you put out a request on kbin.social, I suspect there are a lot of people with moderator experience who would be interested in helping

elijah,

@jerry @ernest I’ve been getting into the kbin code the last 2 days, getting. Familiar with symfony, etc.
I’ve been primarily focused on reworking the docker config to be easier to spin up, not dependent on OS tools besides docker, and eventually a suite of containers suitable for publishing pre-built.

elijah,

@jerry @ernest maybe it’ll be helpful to somebody 😅

@ernest @jerry if the way your alpha software handled the influx over the past few days is any indication then what you've built is going to go a long way

jerry,

Almost 100 people have bought @ernest at least one coffee since I posted this last night. Keep it going!

ChrisJohnRiley,

@jerry @ernest Wow that's enough for like a month! Nice ☕

@jerry @ernest Thanks for this. I checked the "about' and "contact" pages but I couldn't figure out how to drop some support on it.

@jerry @ernest is there a way to support work on /kbin through recurring donations on a platform like liberapay or opencollective? coffees don't seem to recur for ernest ^^"

@jerry @ernest Thanks for running the instance, Jerry, and thanks Ernest for your work! Is there still something wrong with the federation? I subscribed to a few magazines, e.g. buttcoin@kbin.social from my Fedia account, but no posts are visible on Fedia despite several threads being created on knob.social in the meantime…

maskedman,

@jerry @ernest I'm getting a gateway timeout. Is this a hug of death on the donation site or something else?

jerry,

@maskedman @ernest looks down for me too. Hopefully that means it’s raining money for Ernest

maskedman,

@jerry @ernest I went to a random different "buymeacoffee" webpage, and they are also down.

gme,

@jerry @ernest Are you encountering many 500 errors? I’m getting reports from users on kbin.lgbt of a bunch of 500 errors and some I can reproduce but others I can’t.

bhawthorne, (edited )

@jerry @ernest Thanks for the suggestion, Jerry. I’m a coffee fiend, and one cup of coffee is never enough. 5 cups of coffee winging their way to Ernest. Thanks, Ernest!! https://www.buymeacoffee.com/kbin

Can I paypal to send support?
stripe is no option for me.

is written within ? Oh my, that's my daily driver. I'll take a look. Maybe I can help.

Thanks, I was looking to see if there was a donate page.

lgtm,

@jerry @ernest what’s the difference between kbin and Lemmy?

lusule,

There’s a number of posts covering this in detail but in summary they are different federated platforms that do more or less the same thing, but one of them is apparently built by a tankie who also runs the largest instances and has a history of promoting pro-tankie propaganda and banning or muting people who speak out against it. I’ve read that he is on record as having some pretty extremist views, possibly verging on the genocidal but I can’t verify this, I’m merely regurgitating what I’ve read.

Kbin was built in response to this but wasn’t yet ready for prime time, considering which @ernest has performed miracles.

GoatJamesAz,

@jerry @ernest Anyone knows if search engines index fediverse posts? Or is it too early to tell since its just getting traction

figaro,

@jerry @ernest
Kbin is absolutely our best reddit alternative right now. Lemmy is good and I'm glad it exists, but it feels more alpha than anything right now.

Kbin on the other hand feels more polished. It needs work, definitely, but you can feel the potential when you use it.

Thanks to all the devs out there working to build the future. Who knew it's what we'd need in 2023 😂

stevenroose,

@jerry @mastodonmigration @ernest Isn't written in Javascript? I doubt that will be able to scale to anywhere needed for large adoption.. But then again, what do I know, Facebook is written in PHP 🤷

jerry,

@stevenroose @mastodonmigration @ernest it’s mostly php using the symfony framework

    @pauliehedron @stevenroose Not that one can't make multiprocess software in Javascript with a like or others.

    I'd still recommend something like to handle that sort of horizontal scaling sanely, but having something currently working (however efficiently) is still good.

    yuki2501,

    @jerry @ernest I made a small forum with fedia but someone beat me to it elsewhere, so it's a testament to trying out new things and quickly discarding them.

    alex_02,

    @jerry @ernest currently broke, but will boost.

    @alex_02 @ernest I got you. The fediverse is for everyone. (Well, almost everyone)

    fennix,

    @jerry @alex_02 @ernest I threw in 5 coffees as well. Kbin as an alternative to reddit so far seems awesome, and supporting a dev to work on it seems like an easy win to me.

    > The fediverse is for everyone. (Well, almost everyone)

    You got it right the first time. Good moderation tools and practices mean there's some people here most of us never see posts from, nor would we want to. But like the net as a whole, they're still part of the 'everyone' it's for.
