Most people access the Fediverse through one of the large instances: lemmy.world, kbin, or beehaw. New or small instances of Lemmy have no content by default, and can most easily get content by linking to larger Lemmy instances. This is done manually one "Community" at a time (I spent 15 minutes doing this yesterday). Meanwhile,...

okay so here's my understanding: browse.feddit.de/ will not show you all communities on the fediverse.
feddit.de is a website built on the software called "lemmy". there are several websites that all connect to the fediverse (sh.itjust.works, kbin.social, mastodon.social, etc) running different software (lemmy, kbin, mastodon, etc). browse.feddit.de/ will only show you communities from websites that run the lemmy software
kbin is a different software from lemmy, which is different from some other software that connects to the fediverse. So far to my knowledge, there is no universal search for communities across the fediverse.
I'm not sure why, it might be due to the fact that kbin is new and search providers like at browse.feddit.de/ and https://lemmyverse.net/ haven't added kbin instances to the search function? Maybe they don't want to search for kbin instances?
I've noticed Lemmyverse.net does not include kbin communities in its search and only shows communities on lemmy instances. is there a search service that can see all communities across the fediverse agnostic to the platform?
Totally unrelated to this discussion but my curiosity got me:
beehaw users will see an altered version that hides/removes lemmyworld posts.
What would it look like for someone on beehaw if the comment chain went like this: kbin comment>lemmy.world comment>kbin comment? Would beehaw still see the 3rd comment? Or will it kill everything after the lemmy.world comment, kbin or not?
If those bad actors in sh.itjust.works and lemmy.world are willing to make an account at a new instance just to send hateful messages on beehaw communities, then it wouldn't matter if kbin.social closes new registrations because they can just go to any other instance that has open registration to send those messages to beehaw communities.
if the issue is popular instances having higher numbers of bad actors, then thats an issue for beehaw/other safe spaces. Rather than an issue for kbin (at least right now). Either way, Kbin is not advertised nor planned to be a safe space (from my understanding of ernest's posts). if there are bad actors then they can voice their hate/opinions and get downvoted/reduced. I don't think anyone on kbin.social cares if there's a minority of bad actors that might "color the site in a bad light". Especially since those bad actors aren't here as of right now.
The solution is for safe spaces like beehaw to continue defederating from popular instances to keep their space "safe". This will continue to happen whether kbin.social closes registration or not.
kbin.social (ernest): /kbin contribution and information for instance owners
The search form has been fixed (if you were experiencing this issue). This time, the Docker recreate may take a bit longer. Moving forward, when making changes, I will create pull requests like everyone else and ask for your review. Sorry for the inconvenience. Soon, the first tagged release will also be available. That Reddit will not shut down. It will take the hit and go on and probably make at least some money. Only, it will be a much different place, more like Facebook or Instagram, in that it will be full of ads and less specific information....
I was on Fark for tennish years until I wasn't interested in the direction they were taking and moved to Reddit where I eventually made a profile. Now, some 11 years later, Reddit is going in a direction I'm not interested in, so I've moved to kbin.
Whether Reddit (and Fark) carry on is irrelevant to me.
Edit: I've been schooled in the comments, this is no longer a thing, they've relented and allowed more control over the censor list. But hey, it's kinda funny still, so, feel free to keep reading if you like......
I think from memory that the kbin dev was talking about getting "AutoMod" enabled on the site to help future moderation so having something like that would give you more options over how content is held in moderation.
I assume once AutoMod gets integrated there won't be a need for a global ban list anymore.
Wow, I hadn't even heard about the Twitter DMs, that's really ridiculous.
And I think federated sites like Lemmy and kbin are the future of the internet, I mean, no ads, decentralized, and I mean we were already making all of the content on Reddit so it's not like we need them for anything when we have Lemmy.
It's actually a link to a comment in this post, for some reason jerboa gave me a kbin link. I've removiing the kbin part. And reformatting it
Edit: ok so I need to work out how to translate these links coz that didn't work
Essentially it was about the fediverse using a "push" model, meaning instances push their comments to other instances. It means you can see the community and posts, but if you comment on it, it won't get pushed to the instance that hosts the community - only people from your instance will see the comments and posts
If a community defederates, it essentially blocks the push, preventing it from reaching the community.
Because they don't get listed by browse.feddit.de you'll want to browse https://kbin.social/magazines to browse "magazines", which is what they call communities...
I haven't been able to join Kbin magazines by searching in the !magazine format, but when I just paste the URL from Kbin into the search I've been able to add them that way.
Maybe a dumb question, but are you saving the settings? If that’s not the issue then yeah, must be a bug. Hopefully one that gets fixed soon!
Edit: another option might be to adjust the kbin settings (not your account settings). Scroll down to the bottom of this thread and you should see a gear icon. In that, turn “top menu” on and at least you can toggle between views more easily!
With the Apollo app for Reddit shutting down soon, I’m going to need to start relying on Mastodon for all of my cute animal photo, gif, and story needs. #Apollo#Reddit#Animals#SmallTalk
