Muss #Hopepunk immer so naiv daherkommen?
I’m going to reread “The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet” by Becky Chambers, and then read the three follow up books in The Wayfarers series. I’ve bought the subsequent books as ebooks as they were released, but I’ve never read them. Time to fix that.
Listening to A Prayer for the Crown-Shy (#audiobook versions of both books are wonderful). I just got to the part where Dex and Mosscap are heading to Dex's family's house and Dex is explaining their family, and I'm just melting with happiness at how normalized it all is. No spoilers. Just read it. :)
I need your help #bookstodon. One of the classes I'm taking at the graduate level this semester is Religion & Science Fiction. I read more fantasy, and would like to do my research paper on something that's not obvious (like ST/BS5/Matrix/etc.) & I'd love to use more modern sf rather than the golden age classics.
Anyone have any interesting ideas for my research paper on regarding the intersection of religion and science fiction?
I'll mention #DouglasAdams as well. But point you toward Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. It's goofy and fun and not terribly deep, but the conceit that Earth was built as a computer to figure out the ultimate question strikes me as an answer to religion.
“So, the paradox is that the ecosystem as a whole needs its participants to act with restraint in order to avoid collapse, but the participants themselves have no inbuilt mechanism to encourage such behavior.” A Psalm for the Wild-Built - Becky Chambers
just finished A Psalm for the Wild-Built by #BeckyChambers, which made me cry 😭
I'm not good at writing reviews, but this book made me feel so seen. Dex is me; I too have a wandering heart; I too feel a constant war between needing to throw away everything I've built to seek a new purpose and dreading starting over, again
I love the religion in the book; I love the God of Small Comforts. I love the tea ceremony. I LOVE Mosscap so much. and I fucking love that the entire book is basically two people: one who uses they pronouns, and the other who uses it pronouns.
anyway, you should probably read it. I'm going to start A Prayer for the Crown-Shy now
Just finished "A Psalm for the Wild Built" by Becky Chambers. What a lovely book! Unique premise, beautiful writing, and an inspiring vision of a #Solarpunk world. It poses deep question that will sit with you long after you read it. I can't recommend it highly enough.
On a personal level, I've been working through questions about my vocation, and this book really went deeply to that place I've been at for the past few years.
Finally getting around to #BeckyChambers novella “To Be Taught, If Fortunate”. Love a bit of #scifi competence porn, and the idea of essentially crowdfunding space exploration as a humanistic enterprise is kind of brilliant.
Lisez Becky Chambers ! #MastoLivre#SFFF#SolarPunk
Read the first entry in the #WayfarerSeries by #BeckyChambers: "The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet." I didn't know it was considered queer sci-fi going in, and I still hesitate to apply the label. It's definitely identity affirming and inclusive and lovely, but it's also undeniably riveting. I loved all the characters, their development, their species, histories, politics, etc. It also somehow pulls off being super chill. 😌 Loved it. Recommend.
I saw some of his art online and thought it looked like “Invisible Hands” from Liquid Television, which I LOVED. Same artist! This didn’t have quite the same level of twisted, creepiness as that animated series, but I was so happy to find his work in comic form. There’s more too.
Book 26: “The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet” by #BeckyChambers.
Wow, not what I expected: actual character development in a sci-fi title with lots of new species, cultures, and morphologies. How refreshing to take the time for this and not just plot plot plot! It does drag just a teeny bit: I wanted more to happen at one point. But I have faith Chambers can calibrate plot and character development for the rest of this series. Excited to read the rest.
Really enjoyable, and only the second book in this series. This one follows two characters from the first book, and like the first, devotes good time to their arcs. Unlike the first, the plot moves quicker: it jumps back and forth in time to explore one character’s history.
I think it works as a standalone book, but even better if you read the series. Taking my time to read the next one to prolong it.
