Mars Express is a smart and stylish addition to the sci-fi noir canon (www.theverge.com)

Mars Express is a futuristic detective story about the autonomy of synthetic beings — which is to say, it’s the latest in a long line of sci-fi influenced by Ghost in the Shell and Blade Runner. But while its premise may be familiar, the movie makes up for it with style and energy. The debut feature from director Jérémie...

Monkey Man review: a thrilling ultraviolent spectacle (www.bfi.org.uk)

Its multiple story threads and attempts to satirise India’s government sit awkwardly with the action, but there’s much to admire in Dev Patel‘s frenzied, ultraviolet genre spectacle....Shot and choreographed with a kineticism that never veers too far into the sleekly balletic, the fight scenes here are often enthralling...

‘Close to You’ Review: Elliot Page Makes an Affecting Big-Screen Return in a Fragile Homecoming Drama (variety.com)

In his first male film role, Elliot Page brings palpable personal investment and empathy to Dominic Savage's homecoming drama 'Close to You.' "Close to You” marks a reintroduction for Elliot Page, a screen presence at once warmly familiar and sharply redefined, finally established on his own terms. In his first film role since...

Is "Drive-Away Dolls" Proof That the Coen Brothers Don't Need Each Other? (www.insidehook.com)

The Ethan Coen crime farce is good, but would it have been better with both siblings? Can filmmakers ever really claim to have solo projects? There are well-established dynamics to a musician splitting off from a group to make an album of their own, even when it requires a new set of supporting musicians. But while there are...

Spaceman Review - Empire magazine (www.empireonline.com)

Adam Sandler is a lonely astronaut whose strained marriage is helped by an alien spider, voiced by Paul Dano. The occasionally spotty quality of his filmography means it’s easy to forget that Adam Sandler is one of the most talented actors of his generation. Though there have been some dramatic turns over the years, Sandler is...

Longer than intended, includes mini reviews of films one and two before I delve into film number three.

Sometimes when I'm writing, something clicks, and I can't stop spewing my thoughts onto the page. This is one of those reviews, it's a long one.

Beverly Hills Cop III

Enjoy. :blobcatheart:

AI afterlife, robot romance, and slow-burn slashers: the best of Sundance 2024 (www.theverge.com)

AI is the buzzword of the moment, and nowhere seems to be safe — even film festivals. This year’s edition of Sundance was a prime example. Multiple documentaries about the past and present of artificial intelligence made an appearance, and at least one film — the dark comedy Little Death — utilized generative AI as an...

🎥 Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) - ★★★½ ☆

💬 Ein bisschen wie ein Fiebertraum mit Features wie aus Inception und Matrix. Zum Schluss leider etwas zu viel Fieber (oder es war etwas spät am Abend).

I got a "refrigerator question" after #Silo TV series (You enjou a film but later get a "wait-what?" moment) It makes no sense for absolute tyranny to exist in a community of less than 10k people, struggling to survive in a hole. Why lie to people for hundreds of years yet the truth increases chances or survival?

Is tyranny just an overused trope in dystopias for story conflict, or is this how the system makes us tolerate the bad governments of today?

Is Saltburn the most divisive film of the year? (www.theguardian.com)

The mixed response to Emerald Fennell’s 00s-set thriller evinces a movie-going conundrum: how do we assess entertainment that is predominantly indexed on vibes? By now, the buzz around Saltburn, Emerald Fennell’s sweaty, lascivious sophomore feature about a middle-class interloper in a vacuously rich family, has begun to...
