POOR THINGS
by Alasdair Gray

“As Yorgos Lanthimos’ film adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s novel POOR THINGS has received not only rave reviews but numerous accolades, including four Oscars, it’s the perfect time to look at the source material. This is not a comparison between the two but rather a chance to give those who don’t know the novel an idea of what to expect, and of what makes it exceptional.”

Poor Things: Bella's Discovery of the World - Review (www.lascimmiapensa.com)

A breath of fresh air in terms of cinematic innovation, aesthetics, and content. Yorgos Lanthimos directs and co-writes this film with Tony McNamara, providing numerous moments of entertainment while also provoking thought. The film liberates itself entirely from societal constraints, aiming to rediscover the primal sense of...

I went to see this afternoon.

In an era of algorithmical movies (and series and music) I thought I had seen it all. Was convinced movies would either be (for me) unwatchable artsy, or forgettable bland amusement.

But here's the proof I was wrong. Truly original. Weird. Just the right amount of discomfort. Funny, sad, empowering. And taught me new insights about my position as western white male in an unfair society.

Truly impressive how all that fits perfectly in one .

I've just watched and… what? I have absolutely no idea where I could put this in my head.

This was definitely different. Not bad. Just different. Maybe not even good? I don't know. I think I liked it? But it was so weird and… well different.

I knew absolutely nothing about this film despite the fact that Emma Stone plays the lead role. For me enough of a reason to watch it as she is my favorite actress.

But nothing in this world could have prepared me for what I just watched.

Quote from article: Events of recent days are a reminder of the real-life battle that is underway between truth and lies, between the pursuit of knowledge and the effort to deny peoples’ capacity to know.

@sharonecathcart I just saw before the yesterday too and the following quote from the article helped me better understand the theme of the movie.

"The visually gorgeous film offers plenty of Bella’s sexual awakening, which surely appeals to Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos, but may distract many moviegoers from its larger theme."

It definitely confused me. 💩

"I hope that Bella’s pursuit of knowledge—which continues to accelerate as Bella learns more and more about the reality of life—is the the theme that lingers."

The theme didn't linger with me but I plan to re-watch the movie with this point in mind which should give me a better appreciation the film.

Finally saw , one of the most original films I've ever seen. Emma Stone is astounding, as are the costumes, production design, cinematography, and music. The tale of an innocent's education seemed classic and archetypal, inevitable as a dream, even if the eccentricities were turned up to 11.

Beautiful, weird, sexy and (unexpectedly) rather funny and sweet. Emma Stone's performance is unforgettable.
