Didn’t need another streaming subscription, but free’s free! Turns out that my new 2nd gen Max (didn’t need another of those, either) comes with 6 months free MGM+. Installed and activated that. Now I have ELEVEN billion shows at my fingertips. 👍😵‍💫📺

have refurbed 4K (not Max) for $17 each. Completely worth it even if just to get a spare remote (Amazon remotes are basically my favourite of all time, esp the pro version).

sucks. I've had this 4K MAX now for only a little over 30 days and it completely shit the bed. It connects to the internet but that's all it does. None of the apps work. I did every kind of reset and reboot you can think of an still it doesn't work. Now I get to fight with a mega corporation to honor their warranty without charging me 16 bucks for a replacement.

That’s it. Packed up the #AppleTV for the last time. What finally did it for me was the #Netflix app not correctly detecting streaming bandwidth and increasing resolution. And it’s done this before. Play a show, it pixelates like I’m streaming over a 300bps modem, which is sometimes normal with apps until they detect that you in fact have an #AX5400 with #wifi6 and #beamforming and the quality increases. NF app quality didn’t increase. Quit out of the app (I HATE that you can only endtask on the ATV with its own remote and ONLY with swiping turned on, which I don’t have by default because it causes misfires when clicking), start NF app again, same shit stream quality. Back to #FireStick, quality perfect.

Jesus Apple. How do you get things so right (#iPhone, #iPad) and yet so miserably wrong (AppleTV, #AppleWatch and #MacOS - yeah y’all heard me!) almost dead-on 50% of the time either way?

Just as fascinating: that people don’t even realize how much better the alternatives are. 😵‍💫🤷🏻‍♂️

Returned my unopened (duplicate) to Costco today and got a full refund.

My advice to everyone - don’t buy this device. Apple have the best implementation of an interface in terms of prettiness and speed, but the worst implementation of an actually efficient and useful operational environment in the entire ecosystem. They’ve shown up to someone else’s game wearing a Burger King crown and expecting everyone to play by THEIR rules. and have already given them the 🖕and are NOT integrated. It’s fucking horrible. It really is.

I’m still trying to force feed myself the koolaid with my remaining ATV but I fear that very, very soon it will be put back in its box and Craigslisted off to some gibbering goose who doesn’t know there’s far better tech out there.

I can’t wait for the new and Max. I have too many streaming devices already, but not as many as I have or . Still have to catchup.

Excited to see new “ Compatibility Mode” on the latest nightly build of for .

Disappointed to discover that even with this mode the damn thing won’t play DV files.

Despite the fact that KODi installed on my DOES play DV files on my TV.

Seriously, what’s the difference? TV’s OS is Android. FireStick is Android. Exact same build of KODi. One plays DV fine. One does not. Both should. The one that is not the TV plays it on the TV. The TV does not play it on the TV. But Plex on TV plays DV. Jellyfin as well. But not KODi. WHY.

Because I simply don’t have enough dumb streaming sticks/devices I just HAD to go out and get another one today. The wife has a small 1080p TV in the chick cave to watch news and whatnot while working. And she’s been happy with her #FirestickMax. But I had a problem with it. We’ve been gravitating more to the #GoogleTV/#AndroidTV world and both of our new TVs by default use that. Different front end than a #FireStick. I wanted her to have GoogleTV on the chick cave unit so when I heard that Staples were flushing out older #Chromecast HDs I went hunting them down. In store clearance only. And I got one today. Only $12! A little slower of a device but now her recently watched crap can persist across multiple tellies.

I have like six or seven Firesticks here gathering dust now. Not exaggerating. I truly need an intervention.

I have several Firesticks and now two new TVs. Almost every remote has different quick buttons at the bottom that hard-map to apps. Even with two of the same model , the remotes have diff app buttons. And you can’t program them at ALL on FireStick or TVs, even with . Even the cheap Chinese replacement remotes on Amazon have these locked in. What about if I don’t WANT button 4 to == Peacock? Sigh.

Amazon’s Alexa Remote Pro is well designed, feels good to hold and it has two programmable buttons - yay! - but it only works 100% with FireStick - boo!

God damn you, peer pressure and deal monkeys furiously flagellating yourselves on bargain threads extolling the virtues of this blasted thing. I didn’t need an #AppleTV 128Gb gen 3, but Costco have them on special for $99 right now. $45 off. So I bought one. I DID NOT NEED ONE. I love #GoogleTV. And #Firestick, for that matter. And you can’t even install Kodi on it. Nnnnnnnnrrrrgh.

For those who DO need one though, jump on this deal immediately, it’s really good. Essentially the best or the second best (nVidia Shield?) streaming device in existence. Slick as a bastard, if the forums speak true.

#GoogleTV interface > #FireTV. I didn’t care one way or the other for a while, but honestly, the fact that GTV collects your last-watched show from every one of your streaming apps - #AppleTV, #Netflix, #Hulu etc - and puts them all into the handy Continue Watching bar, whereas FireTV only collects this info from #PrimeVideo and #Starz (for some reason), is so damn convenient. For the moment, purely for this feature alone, I’ve swapped from #FireStick to the built in GTV interface on my TV.

Didn’t really need to do this but I’ve caught the streaming bug. have a deal where you can drop $75 on a year’s sub to (not particularly thrilling) BUT that gets you a year of premium for free! Which is $240 value. So we did it and now we have Starz, Netflix, +, , +, +, , and . God.

Started watching last night from the hotel room with the latched onto the Wi-Fi. I could happily spend the rest of the year, maybe even the rest of my life, just watching show after movie after show. I don’t want to go back to work. 📺📺📺

I just cannot believe how cheap these streaming sticks are now! Two or three years ago I bought an #odroid n2 to play streamed content from my PC and also locally off a HD. Separately had to buy a FLIRC infrared dongle so I could control it with a separate Logitech harmony remote. N2’s don’t have built in wifi so had to get a USB 5G standalone rabbit ear adapter. And a separate HDMI cable. And MicroSD card to hold the device OS. And it doesn’t support Dolby Vision. And all up it cost me around $150.

#Woot are selling Amazon #FireStick 4K models right now for $17. With remote, hdmi cable, power and built in #DolbyVision, #HDR10 and 802.11ax Wi-Fi. SEVENTEEN DOLLARS FOR EVERYTHING. I just got back from a trip where I plugged the FS into the hotel TV and was instantly able to pick up where I left off on a couple of shows and stream all my bookmarked shit, no muss nor fuss. If I had Plex installled I’d be able to stream off my PC at home as well. Purely insane.

Dear Amazon: for your next iteration, make the four quick buttons (at the bottom of the remote) configurable. Nobody wants to go through this bullshit: https://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-remap-the-app-buttons-on-fire-tv-edition-remotes-with-remapper/

Thanks in advance.

Got an #onn #Android box from Walmart for $20 today. I have enough firesticks to start a Guy Fawkes-level bonfire so I didn’t really need to get this, but I read some good things about it including the processing speed etc and the forums were right. Big woopdy woop when about 0.5% of the time is spend in the menu and the rest is actually streaming video but hey, so far this device seems a really solid alternative to the #firestick. Esp for $20 - has a nice little remote, Android/#GoogleTV and supports #4K. Recommended.

And thus ends my weekend retail therapy.

On the way out there was an abandoned samsung TV on my road and on my way home it was still there.

I decided to test it out, what do I have to lose?
Well, it has a very smol line of deadpixels but I actually don't care. I'm broke, it's free and it doesn't go into landfill so it's not wasteful.

I'm going to need to buy a cable for it becaue it's currently borrowing the cable from my PC and maybe one of those USB/HDMI thingies that you plug in with a remote like a roku, google cast or something.

(If I had paid for it the dead pixels definately would have bothered me.)

@LevelUp@corteximplant.com avatar

Does anyone have any recommendations for firestick, roku, google cast or a box?

I'm curious to know what other people's recommendations would be. If I can get it to work with plex or IPTV then even better.
