"A new accommodation tax enacted by the Greek government came into force this month (January) as part of plans to finance reconstruction efforts following severe forest fires and floods.
The tax increases range from one euro to four euros per night, with amounts based on the official rating of the venue. It is also seasonal, having effect only in the busy tourist months between March and October."
"Through its Alaska Carbon Reduction Fund, the nonprofit Renewable Juneau sells tourism operators carbon offsets, and the money is then used to swap out local households’ oil-fueled heating systems for heat pumps.
#HeatPumps are more efficient than oil heat, and the electricity they consume is produced with #Juneau's clean hydropower."
Patsy Ann (1929-1942) postcard. She was a deaf bull terrier who greeted every ship that visited Juneau. In her time, she was one of the most photographed aspects of Alaska, so thousands of tourists returned home with a picture of her. When she died, she was buried at sea. Her statue on the Juneau cruise ship dock was installed in 1992. #alaskahistory#alaska#juneauhistory#juneau
RIP Juneau, Skagway, Haines...you will be blanketed with lots of snow shortly.
Look at little ole' Sitka on Baranof Island. We seem to be emerging unscathed except for lots of rain...and wind. Lots of wind.
PS. I predicted this morning that the gale warning would change to a storm warning and...bingo! 50kt winds tomorrow on the outside with 29' seas. Follow me for more exceptionally precise forecasts. 🤣
@SilverSalmonAK Here on North Douglas the snow fell for the half hour I was out shifting firewood, then stopped (less than an inch) So not yet buried! #MyAlaskaWx#Juneau
For #MeerMittwoch here's part of Auke Bay near Juneau, Alaska, and some sea lions (or seals; I can never remember which is which) resting on a navigation buoy. This was taken a few months ago at the conclusion of our incredible whale-watching trip out there.

Slowly processing photos from #Alaska and here's one of my favourites so far. These are humpback whales engaged in bubble-net feeding and I think I can count eight in the photo but there's no way to be sure how many were on or below the surface. We saw this spectacle a dozen or more times during this whale-watching boat ride during our stop at #Juneau and it's a memory we'll cherish.
Saturday (more than a week away) Aug 5 in Juneau Featuring new work by Dave Hunsaker, Viktor Bell, Roblin Davis, Darius Mannino, and Mike Tobin, plus performances by Melanie Brown, Marian Call, and Juneau Dance Theatre dancers. #Musicians#ClimateAction#Alaska#Juneau#tlingitaani
Snap from the phone after our departure from #Vancouver last night, heading along the #BritishColumbia coast. Tomorrow, we cross the border when we make our first stop at #Juneau, #Alaska and we've got a whale-seeing boat trip followed by a visit to the Mendenhall Glacier booked.
Had a bit of an early night last night but in our defence we'd been awake for 27 hours by that time.
A friend of mine captured this photo July 2021 taken near #Juneau. It is somewhat rare to see this type of jump let alone capture it with a camera. #Tongass #Alaska #Whales #nature
