grateful to be in Tlingit Aaní I live in the cool wet forests of #SEAlaska. Often found with my nose in a book from the #PublicLibrary, so I may be imagining a different place or time. Moderately techie, unreasonably in favor of salmon runs, seriously studying #IndigenousLanguage, still playing fiddle.

once an alaska economist on twitter unfollowed me because I disagreed that “construct more houses” was the only way out of this housing crisis and suggested we may have some regulatory leverage as well

@seachanger I emphasize the corporate ownership of rental units as a driver of the mess (will a future econ text have a hula hoop, portable classroom, and big empty house as the markers of the Baby Boom?)

I REALLY like this new thing in Juneau: Before every contra dance, an hour of Contra Music Jam, hosted across the street from the dance venue. Flyer says: "Bring an instrument, any tunebooks you have (Portland Collection, Fiddlerʼs Fakebook) All are welcome. "

The authors suggest the best strategy to counter overshoot would be to use the tools of the marketing, media and entertainment industries in a campaign to redefine our material-intensive socially accepted norms.

“…the things that humans can attach status to are so fluid, we could be replacing all of it with things that essentially have no material footprint – or even better, have an ecologically positive one.”

@seachanger norms can change: I have a Life magazine that breathlessly reports that astronauts were running a mile a day to get in shape. and now the @guardian has told me about parkruns where folks run about 3 miles socially every week or so.

Can someone help me with a question?

Are hospitals in the U.S. still required to test all admitted patients for covid, and are they still required to report covid testing data to the CDC?

I thought the requirement ended, but maybe I'm mistaken.

I'm looking for an answer from a credible source.

Thanks :)

RIP Juneau, Skagway, Haines...you will be blanketed with lots of snow shortly.

Look at little ole' Sitka on Baranof Island. We seem to be emerging unscathed except for lots of rain...and wind. Lots of wind.

PS. I predicted this morning that the gale warning would change to a storm warning and...bingo! 50kt winds tomorrow on the outside with 29' seas. Follow me for more exceptionally precise forecasts. 🤣

Happy Indigenous People's Day! Fitting that today we approved the proof to produce this historical marker to honor Ḵaax̱gal.aat a Tlingit civil rights hero who was born in my town and credited with helping to pass the US's first major civil rights legislation, 's Anti-Discrimination Act of 1945. The text is written by L'xeis Diane Benson and translated to Tlingit by X'unei Lance Twitchell. We'll be putting it up once it gets shipped here!

ScoterD,

@Hey_Beth @mike Sorry to seem obtuse here, but Iʼd like to know the wording for the option of search. On my instance, settings/preferences/other has a toggle for "Opt-out of search engine indexing Affects your public profile and post pages "
Is that what allow full text search?

so I’m on a committee that is putting up a bronze historical plaque to commemorate Elizabeth Peratrovich, the great Alaska Native civil rights figure who helped pass the US’s first civil rights legislation in Alaska in 1945.

At the last minute we realized that this quote we were going to put on the plaque, while commonly attributed to EP, can’t be readily found in her writings or news. A great quote but where did it come from? So far, we have no idea

ScoterD,
@ScoterD@alaskan.social avatar

@Scatterseed @seachanger I agree that there was no official record of Elizabeth Peratrovichʼs testimony. (Alaska Senate minutes of meeting are scant) We do have consistent descriptions, from newspapers and story keepers and the then governorʼs biography.

ScoterD,
@ScoterD@alaskan.social avatar

@seachanger with "Fighter in Velvet Gloves" research, I still donʼt think there is a recording nor a contemporaneous written record of her testimony

ScoterD,
@ScoterD@alaskan.social avatar

@seachanger @Scatterseed @AK_OK @AlaskaWx. Good work - Iʼm glad the academic was so helpful I do think that there are statements widely accepted to be things Mrs Peratrovich said (years of civilization or can recognize evil) that can be traced to reliable sources.

This AP story demonstrates how eager some political reporters are to say Trump’s crimes don’t matter. It says the electorate is divided. It says “about half” approve of the indictments. It quotes three of the people polled: all Republicans.

In fact, only a dwindling minority are still able to defend Trump. If you skip the prose and look at the ACTUAL POLL RESULTS, you learn that only 15% of those polled said Trump did “nothing wrong” in Georgia and 21% at the Capital.
