Roger Corman. God damn. What a career, what a life, what a guy!

"The Intruder" (1962), the only the notorious cheapskate lost money on, and not coincidentally, the last time he tried to make a political statement, is on for the curious.

📽️ I discovered earlier that HISTORY OF THE OCCULT is available on , so I guess tonight's movie is settled.

(It's also on for those of you who don't have Kanopy, but if you have a library card in the U.S., I beseech you to check and see if you can access their amazing library of .)

Watching a 1947ish movie called "Repeat Performance." It's got a fun repetition thing like Groundhog Day. Rather ahead of its time.

For a more obscure independent film, check out "Christmas Again" (2015). I remember enjoying that one, and see it's up on so will probably watch it again to see how it stands up. I remember a slow moving character-driven flick that pulls you in.

"There once was a time when you could donate a book to the library to give others in your community access to it. There once was a time when libraries owned the works that they provide to the public, rather than finding themselves trapped by unethical technology and predatory licensing fees," said Greg Farough, campaigns manager at the FSF. One of those films that influenced so many other, often greater, later films that it’s a wonder Billy Wilder didn’t sue everyone into the ground.

There are too many ‘colourful antics’ for my taste, and not enough made of the letters from home complaining about rationing. Still, it’s thrilling and suspenseful.

Highly recommended.

★★★★☆

William Holden as the camp scrounger / marketeer ‘Sgt J.J. Sefton’ in the 1953 Billy Wilder / Paramount motion picture “Stalag 17.”
Harvey Lembeck (left) as ‘Sgt Harry Shapiro’ and Robert Strauss (right) as ‘Sgt Stanislaus “Animal” Kuzawa’ in the 1953 Billy Wilder / Paramount motion picture “Stalag 17.”
Peter Graves (centre, with suspicious look in his eye) as ‘Sgt Frank “Security” Price’ in the 1953 Billy Wilder / Paramount motion picture “Stalag 17.”

If you’re wondering if you’re the only one yelling in frustration about The State Of Things Right Now, rest assured that Barry Crimmins had been doing it longer than you. He was also doing it louder, more articulately, and with more invective.

He’s the most brilliant political satirist who I’ve never heard of. He was also the most active soldier by a long shot in the war against assured wrongness.

As bitter as he was, he’s an inspiration.

★★★★★

Patron Oswalt in the 2015 Bobcat Goldthwait documentary “Call Me Lucky.”
David Cross in the 2015 Bobcat Goldthwait documentary “Call Me Lucky.”
Barry Crimmins in the 2015 Bobcat Goldthwait documentary “Call Me Lucky,” which is about Barry Crimmins.

Watched Knock at the Cabin last night. I loved it but think it would mainly appeal to M. Night Shyamalan fans since (as is not atypical for Shyamalan films) what's happening isn't made clear until the very end.

@geekaren That was one of the few M Night films I watched in a while, great acting. If your library partners with Kanopy, they have lots of great movies. Lady in the Water has been on my watch list for a while there. A24 films are often on there and Everything Everywhere All At Once was added recently. I like that they have hard to find festival films, documentaries, etc Depending on your local library you can stream 7-10 films a month. .

I just finished watching LABOR WARS OF THE NORTHWEST: THE STRUGGLE THAT DEFINED THE REGION

https://laborwarsnw.com/

Blurb: "...chronicles the cauldron of discontent, radicalism and violence that permeated the region in the early decades of the twentieth century."

Fascinating film. So much I never knew about my region.

I watched it on https://www.kanopy.com/
