One of my projects this weekend was to frame the garden with a well buried garden border. Garden is 10’x30’. I know, pretty small.

Why you ask? Mole and/or vole control.

I had created a barrier on one side to block their path last year and guess what? It worked. So, I wrapped it around the whole garden.

I read they burrow about an inch or two under the surface. If they come up against an obstacle, they go around, but not up or down.

They get to live!

Tip: what to do with old/dead yeast

Slug death trap. This tip comes from a limacologist. Slugs are more attracted to bread dough than any other scent. They are also attracted to beer and will die in the alcohol. I use this in my sunroom to protect growing fruit and seedlings.

Sorry for non-glorious pic.

One trick to be successful in growing vegetables without a drop of pesticides entering the farm in 5 years: try every seed/cutting you can find, repeat what wants to grow, keep trying what failed another year since the food web keeps getting better and potentially has brought in predators for the pests that were previously unmitigated.

I dont see any more pest damage on my plants, veggies and fruits than nearby farms that drench their food and land in assorted poisons on schedule.

Cabbage: tempting juicy target for pests, still growing strong despite few attempts at biting into its leaves. The pests were likely mitigated by their predators while I was napping 🙃

To have a standing army, you gotta feed 'em even when it isn't war time - I let much of my plants bolt and leave them in place for insects and birds. Let volunteer plants grow, or move them to appropriate locations. It isn't "neat" but it's autonomous security.
