Either I'm going to the super unpopular venues/acts, or this years Wave-Gotik-Treffen has a surprisingly low turnout. In any case, enjoying amazing music across so many genres.

If animated Star Trek is something you love and want to support, watching on Netflix is a great thing to do right now.

@GoodAaron woah is there a new season of out?!

I need to know if Chakotay is okay!

And the demand satisfaction 😅

It would be cool if we could get the Harry Kim to at least make a cameo as well... 🤞

almost 9 years later and I'm still passing around Casey West's "Durable Communication" post as the gold standard on advice for leading distributed teams. (Any #perl folks know if cwest is out here in the Fediverse somewhere?) http://caseywest.com/durable-communication/

Just discovered that the back 10 episodes of S1 are available on BluRay, so of course I ordered it. This is a show that's greater than the sum of its parts and commands a lot more respect than its given credit for, so naturally I had to have it on disc. If ever there's no other season of this show save this one, it'll be something worth keeping.

Logo from police training materials for The Pay Party Unit - “A Guide To Acid House Parties”. The PPU were an anti-rave unit set up to monitor pirate radio, tap phones and track down raves. In 1989, they monitored 4,380 telephone calls and made 258 arrests.

In 1994, the Tories pushed through the Criminal Justice & Public Order Act, banning outdoor parties that played "a succession of repetitive beats". Labour abstained, advised by Tony Blair to let it through.

Stoat,

The Criminal Justice Bill is the reason this song exists.

"The Act was described by Professor of Cultural Studies Jeremy Gilbert as a "piece of legislation which was "explicitly aimed at suppressing the activities of certain strands of alternative culture", the main targets being squatting, direct action, football fan culture, hunt sabotage and the free party."

if trek shows were software service roles:

  • lower decks is obviously sre
  • discovery is infosec
  • DS9 is neteng
  • tos is the mainframe sysadmins who literally run the world

prove me wrong

mikemol,

@renice is red team. is the beleaguered that keeps getting told there's no funding for a dedicated blue team. Except sometimes comes along claiming to be blue team, but they're really a bunch of self-motivated charcoal-hat cowboy coders on shadow projects. You're pretty sure most of them couldn't pass the company code of conduct policy tests. There's a persistent rumor they're going to get formally recognized as a skill team any quarter now.

is that startup that never quite lands their IPO, and keeps having to seek new sources of VC funding along the way. They keep picking up new people, and the old hands can barely remember what it was like before seven years of 24/7 crunch time.

is that code that gets away with not charging for their services because the parent company accidentally bundled them with a datacenter's electric bill, where they're just noise in the budget.

is the local users group that's all gung-ho about . They've got some good points and originated some iconic features, but they're principally about nostalgia these days.

is the retrocomputing club. Spectrum Sinclairs and Altairs line the walls, but are mostly for show. Someone converted an old IBM POWER workstation into a so they could show Kid Pix to the kids. Everybody else spends their time showing off their DOS savegame files on the club's file server. One guy is playing DOOM in the corner with the music coming from an external Roland MIDI keyboard. Another guy figured out how to launch old DOS door games under containerized instances via inetd, but people stopped talking to him once he solved the sandbox escape problem by having systemd launch the containers on-demand in a deprivileged chroot.

is the club founded by that guy from the retrocomputing club that got DOS door games running via systemd; Now he's porting his door game collection to run in , and has managed to reach a new generation of people respinning the classics.

is the users group. Really a subgroup of the local retrocomputing club. They hate it, because people keep confusing their interests with Mac OS Classic and Linux.

Did I miss anyone?

I find it strange that people are pining for . It had a very interesting first season, but suffered greatly from bad writing for much of the second and third. Some gems there, but the overall arc Mary Sue’s Burnham IMO. Canceling is a travesty tho.

yerald, to StarTrek

Saw a comment today that said essentially, is canceling and , the only two shows exploring new ideas in the Star Trek Universe, making Trek into another franchise running on nostalgia, running on fumes, and I couldn't agree more.

yerald,

While is up for an exciting year, I'm concerned Trek is disconcertingly dying right as it seemed to be reaching a point of renaissance. Like Marvel, it's prioritizing 45yo straight white dude-nerds nostalgia, over engaging kids or any other audience, and while I love , it just ain't the future anymore than watching uncle ben die for the 28,000th time is.

    OnlyTheJaneway, to StarTrek

Paramount+ has cancelled whilst S2 is in post production and removed S1 from their streaming service. 🤬😱 The show is now being shopped around to other platforms in the hope it will be picked up elsewhere. Sign the petition by @megsmama to 🖖🏻💜. It’ll have a better chance at being bought by another platform and surviving beyond S2 if buyers see it has a lot of support.
