Rep Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), the fmr #House#speaker who was ousted from his position in Oct in a revolt by hard-right members, will not seek reelection to his congressional seat & will retire from Congress at the end of this month, he announced Wed.
“I have decided to depart the House at the end of this year to serve America in new ways. I know my work is only getting started,” #McCarthy said in a WSJ op-ed.
It will be no suprise to you that the opportunity to #retire early is skewed towards the #wealthy in the UK...
Once again, a demonstration that while money might not buy your happiness (but it certainly helps), wealth allows options that are not on the table for others....

14/17 If they decide to #retire, or become #incapacitated and unable to fulfill their role due to illness or death, they're out, and the remainder of their 1-year term is filled by the then-oldest sitting member of the Commons or #Senate, as appropriate - the same one they represented.
At the expiry of the original 1-year term, the replacement's term is finished, and the selection goes on as usual with a new person.
