In today's article I've written about how design systems can perpetuate systemic harm, and share 3 principles for mitigating that. The article is adapted from a talk I gave at #SmashingConf in Freiburg this year.
#SmashingConf in #belgium#antwerp is a wrap for me and it's been the most wonderful experience. It felt extremely friendly, great staff and stellar organization and of course truly inspiring talks. Looking forward to the next one. Thank you @smashingmag 💖
Highly recommender especially for #frontend developers! ☝️
#SmashingConf Public speaker secrets none talks about: "Only one dangling earing" is the speaking wearing a madona mic aesthetic. If you know, you know 😁
(Big dangling earings and madona mics don't work well together, you might need to remove the earing on the side of the mic)
Also while I'm at it: if you plan to wear a dress for public speaking, plan and outfit with a belt. Because you need to attach the battery somewhere 😁
#SmashingConf It's a marathon, not a sprint is a sentence that we hear often associated with product design. But some teams also stay stuck in discovery. How about "it's a marathon, AND a sprint" and you need to find a good balance. Via Fabricio Teixeira @fabriciot
#SmashingConf Christine Vallaure @moonlearning brings us back to the 960 grids. 😭
The cool thing: now we have responsive and container queries. Yeaaaah!
#SmashingConf Our mystery speaker is Seb Lester, what a wonderful way to start our second day.
But how do you calculate pricing for a logo for a space mission, in terms of usage on a big rocket?
#SmashingConf to pick a good font for UI, start with the font category - Oliver Schöndorfer
Start with a sans serif.
Then look at the words and assess your contrast of size. You want something with very even strokes.
Letter shapes need to be open.
#SmashingConf Great reminder from Luke Wroblewski: start with the problem, not with the solution. Let the problem space guide solutions. Yes, basic, but so many people still start with "we want a chat or" and retrofit from there. This is how you end up with tools, products, not matching user needs.

Molly Hellmuth is explainig how to adopt new figma features without too many risks. The first advice: don't jump into replacing your current styles, instead, start adding variables to new places where it won't break things. Oups 😭
