November 20th is Transgender Day of Remembrance, where we honour the memory of transgender people whose lives have been lost due to acts of anti-transgender violence. 🏳️⚧️ #TransDayOfRemembrance#TDOR2023
Today is the #TransDayofRemembrance
Remembering all the transgender people who were either murdered or bullied to the point of suicide just for being their true selves.
Be your true self, it will always be a better world with you in it. 🏳️⚧️
This #TransDayOfRemembrance Emz and I are holding the loved ones of those that should still be here close in our hearts. We will mourn those gone today and tomorrow continue to fight for the living. We are both feeling extremely fragile this year I think it’s the toughest yet for us.
This #TransDayOfRemembrance we want to come at you with facts. Let’s leave no room for confusion:
-Between 2017 and 2022, an average of 350 trans people were murdered every single year
-trans people are 4 times more likely to experience violence and abuse compared to cis people
-Violence against trans people is rising, not getting better
-Many of these statistics are likely to be higher due to ambiguity around gender identity, and a lack of reporting crimes
Attacks on trans people happen because of the erroneous belief that most people think they’re justified. Every individual who speaks up helps to change this | Jennie Kermode
Last week @martin shared something on FB from the #BlackQuakerProject that got a comment about the way #Quaker meetings often isolate themselves from local community groups.
I was talking about that with a #trans Friend last night, and we suddenly remembered: it’s 2 months until #TransDayOfRemembrance ! That critique can apply to our organizations’ relationships with many local communities.
I usually, mid-November, go “oh, #TDOR is next week. I should look up the details for the vigil.” But that is TOO LATE to be starting to educate our meetings as to the significance & reminding about the date!
