Yesterday the verdict on Brianna Ghey’s trial was passed. While it’s great to see that justice has been served, it’s important to note that an environment has been cultivated which makes two people think that this was acceptable

So many things contributed to this egregious event, including the government and media outlets nurturing this dangerous position our people are in. Justice has been served for Brianna, but until something changes, the factors which contributed to this won't be addressed

-Between 2017 and 2022, an average of 350 trans people were murdered every single year
-trans people are 4 times more likely to experience violence and abuse compared to cis people
-Violence against trans people is rising, not getting better
-Many of these statistics are likely to be higher due to ambiguity around gender identity, and a lack of reporting crimes

With a reported 54% of LGBTQ+ students having reported being bullied in school, what can this transphobic bullying look like?

• Deadnaming
• Discrimination solely due to gender presentation
• Making fun of someone due to their appearance
• Actively misgendering someone and/or refusing to use someone’s preferred pronouns
• Using transphobic language, or queerphobic slurs towards an individual and others
• Denying one's identity
