Tracing 75 years of Israeli war photography, she explains how images that reframe disproportionate violence as proof of victory have intensified in the war on #Gaza that erupted in 2023.
Very happy to be at the booklaunch and talk of my oldest #anthropologist friend (from masters days the late 90s), Neil Armstrong, talking about “How can we make progress in mental healthcare research” and his ethnography of psychiatry
It occurred to me today that the social value of the open-source work I do in my free time has probably been an order of magnitude more useful to the world than everything I've ever done as a paid employee. Needing to seek a wage almost certainly makes me a less productive member of society than I would otherwise be.
Very interesting. You thought of corruption by administrators (and rightly so, see my posts, e.g., about Nestlé and water-rights abuses, e.g., in the US and elsewhere.)
I thought more of abuse by citizens. People tend to value services that are free of charge low.
Regarding the showcase of #Scandinavian countries, they cannot be the benchmark. I'm no #anthropologist but I'd suspect that the following factors influence this result:
In “The Giving Environment: Another Perspective on the Economic System of Gatherer-Hunters,” the #anthropologist Nurit Bird-David described an interesting social institution among the Nayaka, a forager society in southern India. Bird-David calls this “demand sharing.”
“Nayaka give to each other, request from each other, expect to get what they ask for, and feel obliged to give what they are asked for. They do not give resources to each other in a calculated, foresighted fashion, with a view to receiving something in return, nor do they make claims for debts.”
Rather than making another 10-post-long thread 🧵 on the latest things #Project92, I had mercy on everyone & just wrote 1 blog post…
(TLdr: the sky isn't falling, we have always been a diverse set of cultures and moderation standards, we will work it out on both fronts, but a lot is changing on all fronts & more will. And through it all we have all we need to protect our people.) Open to any thoughts, pushback, etc….
As a cultural #anthropologist, I appreciate your approach to seeing the #Fediverse as having diverse cultures. I really appreciate the even-handed tone and thoughtfulness your bring to these discussions. I am someone who came to Mastodon to get FAR, FAR, FAR away from #BigTech. I do not regret the move. I’m a newbie who is not (yet) wedded to any particular #fediculture. I find everything happening here fascinating.
I wouldn’t mind a trend to more female-identifying fedizens. 😜
