Red hot Truchet tiles in vermillion, magenta, and red violet. Printed on a HP 7585B pen plotter from 1983 on 11x15 watercolor paper. A slight detour of my usual CMY palette 😀
#PenPlotter maintenance today. My HP 7585B stopped responding over RS-232. Diagnostics revealed a problem with the interface card. Luckily I have a spare machine that can donate a new working card!
And it works! Here’s a video of the HP 7585B #PenPlotter plotting a big arc Truchet tile design using three colors (yellow, cyan, and magenta) on 11x15 watercolor. Total time 1h15m.
Video montage of a HP 7585 #PenPlotter plotting a design of large concentric arcs broken up by squares in cyan, yellow, and magenta. It performs tool changes to swap pens automatically.
With less than a month to go, I’m trying to get back into the swing of things for my #PenPlotter exhibit at #VCFEast in April.
I think my Roland DPX-2000 will make an appearance this year. I was able to source 17x22 paper (not cheap but the quality is 😏) so here’s the beginning of some Truchet tiles.
25 minutes later and we’re still plotting. The Roland DPX-2000 isn’t the fastest, but it’s super fun for folks to watch because the paper sits still and the pen does all of the moving (vs the grit wheel kind where the paper moves in one direction and the pen in another). ✍️
Well that was not without issue. It mysteriously stopped twice and I needed to continue it. Not a great thing when you’re giving a demo. But that’s why we test things! Anyway, the result is pleasing. But the paper wrinkles very easily and doesn’t lay flat. The static hold can only do so much with this crappy paper.
Still plotting large works, this time from the CMY Tangled Plus series. If you look closely, you can see it’s created from a structure of tessellated plus signs and hatched with CMY inks. This one is great seen from a distance as well as mesmerizing to see up close.

My first large plot in many months: a new Carousel, about 5 hours in, about 2 hours remaining. Cyan and yellow are down, magenta going down now, and finally black. Python generated and plotted on a vintage HP DraftPro DXL on 24”x36” watercolor paper.
CMYK Carousel in pink and gold, a winter warmer for a chilly day! It may not look like it, but there are cyan strokes in this plot (a little over 9%). Seeing these colors mix over the course of this 5 hour plot is always a joy.

CMYK Carousel with intense swirling vortexes of blue and gold. It reminds me of two galaxies about to collide. Get close and zoom in on the third photo to see the hatching.
