I like little computers and I like BeOS (at least the idea of it and those cool yellow toolbars) so I had a good time at the @ActionRetro table.

Another is in the books. This was my second time as an exhibitor showing my art. It’s always so fun to see people be mesmerized by the plotter drawing intricate generative designs. For some, it’s the first time they’ve seen such a device.

Thanks to everyone who purchased my artwork in the consignment area this year! I hope everyone enjoys their new art for many years.

If you are visiting consignment, make sure you check out the beautiful plotter art by @paulrickards

These are such a great example of creative and technically competent application of vintage technology, and great art pieces for your home!

Really wish I could go but a) living in the wrong part of the country now and b) I’m still pissed that they gave gun-nut-mocking-school-shootings-guy a platform.

I would LOVE to know who's doing the cable TV demo at this weekend. A friend just sent me photos...!
Looks like a single channel NTSC scrambler with a pirate decoder, a bunch of cable modems and a CMTS, and an EAS message receiver/inserter? Cool stuff!

For my 1000th Mastodon post (!) I wanted to share this photo with @paulrickards at on Saturday taken by our friend Erin. Paul's been a great pal, who's introduced me to new ideas and techniques in computer art, is often down with carpooling* to retro/nerd events, and shares a bunch of other creative pursuits.

Also happy to be showing off my @mediaarchaeologylab T!

Jason Scott is stirring up some drama on the eve of because he donated some stuff to but doesn’t actually understand how “donation” and “archiving” work. He’s also taking at face value that someone was “driven out” of the organization when they actually ragequit rather than work within proper governance.

VCFed is a decent organization, especially now, and the VCF events are great. This drama is a tempest in a teapot, and absolutely not a reason not to participate or attend.

On the way down to from the airport I stopped at the old Bell Labs building designed by Eero Saarinen. It’s been repurposed as a work/play/shop space and it’s really nice. It’s great that this amazing space is open to the public. As a design/architecture nerd and fan of the show Severance which is filmed here, I’m totally geeking out.

The reception area of the building, which is in a section sunk down into the floor a few feet. It’s lined by padded couches upholstered in green leather atop granite.
Glass tubular elevators inside the building. All the metalwork is painted black. A fountain is below.

Gathering things for my exhibit for this weekends ! I’ll have two big plotters running (and maybe a third if there’s space) as well as lots of plots, postcards, and 5.25” plotted floppies for sale in the consignment area.

Mother’s Day is coming up soon! Art makes a great gift!

I'll be at in a couple days and I'm stoked! I'll be bringing 2.0 boards to sell there, so if you've been wanting one and you'll be there, it'll be your best chance to get one.

After seeing @paulrickards's post about being at #VCFEast I just realized I can consign items. So I've just added a decent number of #PicoGUS cards to consignment.

Any interest in setting up some sort of GlobalTalk presence while we're there?

With less than a month to go, I’m trying to get back into the swing of things for my exhibit at in April.

I think my Roland DPX-2000 will make an appearance this year. I was able to source 17x22 paper (not cheap but the quality is 😏) so here’s the beginning of some Truchet tiles.

Detail of a Roland DPX-2000 pen plotter, a large machine with a black top surface loaded with paper and a gantry holding a pen drawing a design in the early stages with lots of interconnected arcs. A red LED segment display is visible showing the current X and Y axis position.

paulrickards,
@paulrickards@mastodon.social avatar

25 minutes later and we’re still plotting. The Roland DPX-2000 isn’t the fastest, but it’s super fun for folks to watch because the paper sits still and the pen does all of the moving (vs the grit wheel kind where the paper moves in one direction and the pen in another). ✍️
