In other news Jersey approves plans to allow assisted dying for terminally ill adults.

Jersey can make its own laws, as a Crown Dependency, but I hope all the UK governments take note.

President Emmanuel #Macron said on Sun for the first time that he backed new #EndOfLife #legislation that would allow what he called “help to die" & wanted his govt to put forward a draft bill to parliament in May.

#France's neighbours #Switzerland, #Belgium & the #Netherlands have adopted #laws that allow medically #AssistedDying in some cases. But France has resisted that step, in part under pressure from the Catholic Church.

Orkney MSP Liam McArthur spoke to me about his assisted dying bill, which has cross-party support at Holyrood, and has the backing of a majority of Scottish people. It is controversial, but the more I looked into it, and spoke to those who are suffering or have faced terrible pain, the more compassionate it seems. https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/lifestyle/6390623/orkney-msp-assisted-dying-bill-terminally-ill/

Q. If the does (as it seems it will) legalise , will there need to be 'border controls' to stop those seeking this exit from popping over the water to the IoM to take advantage of its legality (thereby shielding their friends & family form police investigation)?

While this is relatively easily handled when the patient (and supporters) are heading to Zurich, its going to be a lot more difficult for the state to police if there just popping over a bit of the Irish Sea!

Today I update this article to reflect a new research poll I found:

“To put it bluntly, a significant minority think that if you simply do not have enough money, then the option to die should be on the table”
