John Burns fought in the War of 1812, including at the bloody Battle of Lundy's Lane. 50 years later in the American Civil War he was living in Gettysburg, PA when the infamous battle started. He joined the Union lines for the battle and was wounded in the arm, leg, and chest but survived.
He later became a national hero and lived until 1872.
