Went to meet a VIP, as a granddaughter or child is regarded in Japan. We brought her to play in a nearby archaeological site turned into a large park.

The Yayoi Period (弥生時代), which featured an influx of Asian mainlanders with agricultural and metalworking technology, until recently had been estimated as around 300 BC to 300 AD. But the Yayoi civilization in this park (安満遺跡) goes back 2,500 years, and the region also has remnants from the earlier Jōmon Period (縄文時代) New Stone Age culture.

The photos show the characteristic care and pride with which ancient artifacts are regarded in Japan. The illustration in the first photo is especially striking to me. Bronze dōtaku bells from over 2,000 years ago had no practical use, so we can assume that they were used in religious rituals. The first photo illustrates such a scene in the Yayoi Period, and the caption reads: A shaman rings a ritual bell in a festival.

Getting dressed to meet our VIP granddaughter and daughter-in-law, although the conversation is in Japanese, probably many married couples have gone though something like this. Wife: You can't wear that shirt, there are bird droppings on the back! Husband: How about this yellow Indian style shirt? Wife: Wear this one; you can't keep dressing like a bum now that you're an old man.

"For a long time, people came to my community for the sea. Now, they have more reasons to visit, including watching the stars. This international certification means the area will be known to a wider audience overseas, and this will attract more tourists and benefit the local economy."
